Skateboard camp available Ridgewood Parks and Recreation and the Underground Skateshop of Ridgewood will offer a skateboard camp for children ages six through 14. Safety is emphasized as participants learn to ride, perform basic tricks, and maintain their boards. The session consists of 10 lessons to be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon on July 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, and 30, and Aug. 1, 6, and 8. Rain makeup dates will be announced as needed. The camp will be held at the Skatepark at 259 North Maple Avenue. The cost is $125. Participants must bring a board, helmet, and knee pads. Call the recreation office at (201) 670-5560 for details. ‘Stepping Up Mixers’ planned Ridgewood Parks and Recreation and the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse invite village students who will be completing fifth grade in June to meet with fellow students preparing to move on to either the Ben Franklin or George Washington middle schools. The free evening will offer music, dancing, refreshments, and more. The mixers will be held on Friday, June 14 at Anne Zusy Youth Center, located on the lowest level of Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Students from George Washington Middle School Class of 2016 will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Benjamin Franklin Middle School students Class of 2016 will attend from 7 to 9 p.m. Adult chaperones are needed. Tennis instruction and camps available The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department and All Pro Tennis will offer summer tennis lessons and camps for village residents. Youth and adult instructional classes will be held on Monday or Wednesday evenings at the Somerville courts. The fee for each six-week instruction session is $115. Children in first and second grades will meet from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Class for youngsters in grades three through five will be from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Students in grade six and up will meet from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Adult class will be held from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Any classes cancelled due to rain will be made up. Four-day summer camps will be offered at the Somerville courts Monday through Thursday beginning the week of July 1. Camps will continue through the week of Aug. 12. Ninety-minute sessions will be held at either 9 or 10:30 a.m. The fee for each weekly camp is $115. Fridays will be used as rain dates. Participants will be grouped according to age and experience and are required to have a 2013 tennis badge. Sports camps offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will host summer sports camps for children in pre-K through elementary school. Camps will run Aug. 12 through 16 at Maple Park East located at the corner of Meadowbrook Avenue and Northern Parkway. Children ages three through five are invited to join the Summer Sport Squirts program. Participants are introduced to a variety of sports. Sessions are designed to capture imagination, ensure learning, and provide an enjoyable experience while promoting self-esteem, positive values, and good sportsmanship. Two one-hour sessions are available: 9:15 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. The cost is $100 for each session, and all equipment is provided. Children ages five through 12 will have the chance to experience many different sports from around the world. Instruction and play may include badminton, baseball, basketball, bocce, cricket, net ball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, hand ball, floor hockey, discovery games, Olympic games, parachute, pillo polo, soccer, softball, tennis, touch rugby, and volleyball. A full day, which is open to children six through 12, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fifteen sports will be included. The cost is $189. A half-day, which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is available for children five through 12 and will include 10 sports. The cost is $169. Full-day and half-day participants should bring a bag lunch and plenty to drink. Appropriate clothing and sneakers should be worn. The group, which meets on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m., is making shawls and lap blankets for the patients in the New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Home in Paramus. Yarn, needles, and hooks are needed. Register for Mini Art Camps Registration is under way for the Mini Art Camps that will be held at the Stable Aug. 12 through 15. The camps are open to youngsters in grades two through eight. Each camp costs $45. Arts & Crafts will be offered in two sessions: Session I will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and Session II will meet from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. All materials are included. Phelan to present morning program Women at the Well of Christ Episcopal Church will meet on Saturday, May 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Guilds Room. The program, “Women’s Pentecost: Listening to the Spirit,” will be presented by the Rev. Dr. Shane Phelan. Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony set The Washington Elm VFW Post 192 of Ho-Ho-Kus-Ridgewood will hold its Memorial Day Parade and solemn observance in Ho-Ho-Kus on Monday, May 27. All are invited. Veterans and military personnel are asked to march in uniform. U.S. memorial flags will be given to all veterans and military personnel who attend. This year’s speaker is a senior Army officer from the Iraq War. The program will also include a performance of “EchoTaps.” Marchers, military, and other vehicles will form up at Ardmore and Sheridan ave-
nues at 10 a.m. The parade will step off at 10:30 a.m., and proceed south on Sheridan Avenue to the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green on Sycamore Avenue. At the Green, a solemn observance will be conducted to honor the service men and women who paid the ultimate price in all military actions to date and to honor U.S. troops presently serving around the globe. Water safety instructor course offered The YWCA Bergen County will offer the American Red Cross Water Instructor Safety Course from May 28 through June 13. The course certifies individuals ages 16 years and older to teach American Red Cross swim lessons and includes teaching skills for all levels, critiquing skills to correct swim strokes, and instructions on making lesson plans. Participants must take and pass a water skills test, which will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. Classes will be held on select weeknights and Sundays at the YWCA’s 112 Oak Street facility in Ridgewood. The test fee is $10. The course fee is $400 and includes course materials. Pre-registration is required.
