Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 15, 2013 Glen Rock For the second year in a row, Glen Rock High School has been named to Newsweek magazine’s list of the top 2,000 high schools in the country. For 2013, GRHS is ranked 218, up from a ranking of 287 the previous year. Data used in the analysis is self-reported by the institution for the 2011-12 school year. According to the publication, the ranking highlights the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation, “…those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out collegeready grads.” The list is based on six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent). “Glen Rock High School is proud to be associated with the 2013 Newsweek report on America’s Best High Schools,” said Dr. Paula Valenti, superintendent of schools for the Glen Rock School District. “According to the GRHS ranked among country’s top 2,000 schools report, Newsweek and The Daily Beast analyzed graduation rates, participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs, accompanied by acceptance into a two- or four-year college in the calculation. The 2013 methodology was also updated to include a weighting of the percentage of students enrolled in an AP, IB or Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) course. “It should be noted that the Northeast produced 25 percent of the top schools and we are proud that Glen Rock High is among those selected for the roster. Of particular interest is that Glen Rock High School is the number one Bergen County comprehensive high school on the roster. Our students, teachers, and staff are among the brightest and the best, and are led by outstanding administrators. They have made their school, community and families proud.” GRHS Principal John Arlotta, who took the helm in July 2011, said, “We are flattered to be recognized amongst the top high schools in this country. We are proud of our fine student body and staff, who are most responsible for this ranking. We continue to explore ways to personalize the education for each of our students by increasing rigor and offering associated opportunities, based on our students’ talents, passions, and interests.” GRHS currently serves 726 students in grades 9 to 12.
