Emmanuel Baptist welcomes new members Emmanuel Baptist Church, located at 14 Hope Street in Ridgewood, welcomes new members to its services and programs. Sunday morning church school for children and adults begins at 9:15 a.m. A worship service is held at 10:30 a.m. followed by an hour of fellowship. Bible study is held on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and on Thursdays at noon. The church’s ESL Program welcomes students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds. ESL classes are held Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and aim to develop English skills in conversation, grammar, reading, and writing. Young professionals to host event Join the Ridgewood Young Professionals Exchange for a May 23 networking event at Arthur Groom & Co., 262 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. This program is open to business professionals who are age 40 and under. Those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring business cards and a bottled beverage to share. Library to present ‘Princess Ida’ The Ridgewood Public Library will host a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Princess Ida” on May 18 at 2 p.m. in the auditorium. This comic opera sung in English is the light-hearted satirical story of a princess who believes women are superior to men and the male conspiracy against their power bid as seen in Victorian England.
Funding for the production has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council of the Arts through grant funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs. Auxiliary announces ‘A Tour of Kitchens’ The Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its 16th Biennial Kitchen Tour on Wednesday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s tour will feature nine beautiful kitchens located in Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff. Created by award-winning designers, the kitchens range from traditional to ultramodern. The kitchens will include lovely table settings and floral designs. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular outdoor living space and complimentary refreshments. Fashions and accessories from Kurth Gift Shop will be available at a fabulous home in Ridgewood. Proceeds from this event will benefit the auxiliary’s $1.5 million pledge for the expansion of the Breast Surgery Program at the Luckow Pavilion and Valley Home Care’s Butterflies Program, which provides in-home palliative and hospice care for the youngest and most seriously ill children in our community. Community Hymn Festival of Choirs set On Sunday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m., choirs from multiple Bergen County churches of all denominations will participate in the 24th Annual Community Hymn Festival of Choirs at Ridgewood’s West Side Presbyterian Church. This ecumenical event is open to the public. Freewill offerings will be accepted; $10 is suggested. Presented by The American Guild of Organists’ Northern New Jersey Chapter, the annual festival and a fall campaign benefit the John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund for Church Music. The Rodland Scholarships are the
largest such awards to church music majors in the nation. Since its inception in 1990, $206,450 has been awarded in scholarships to future church musicians. This year’s winner of a $9,000 first prize is Abigail Rockwood, a doctor of musical arts candidate at the Eastman School of Music studying with David Higgs. She was a student of Dr. Huw Lewis at Hope College, where she received her bachelor of music. She earned her master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Todd Wilson. “The Music of Pentecost” is the theme of this year’s festival. Organists and choir directors from participating churches will direct or play for the 80-plus voice adult choir, children’s choir, handbell choir, and brass ensemble. Singers are invited to join the chorus at the only rehearsal on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided. The church is located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. Post holds Coins for a Cause Area residents are encouraged to donate their coins to the American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood–Ho-Ho-Kus by participating in Coins for a Cause on Saturday, May 25. Participants are invited to visit Boiling Springs Savings Bank at 531 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and place their change in the bank’s free coin counting machine. Container gardening workshop announced R&S Landscaping will hold a May 16 container gardening workshop that will focus on using tropical plants. This 90-minute workshop will be held at 10 a.m. on the green space behind The Stable at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Julie Watson will discuss tips on how to select plant material, design container plantings, and care for these tropical plants. With Watson’s help and guidance, participants will pot their own containers and take home a personalized, eye-catching creation. Parents are encouraged to bring their children.
