Lawrence “Larry” M. Anderson of Ridgewood died May 5. He was 81. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a 1947 graduate of Clifton High School, attended Cornell University, and was member of the Zeta Psi. A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, he spent his career working at Walter Kidde Co. and Valcor Engineering. He was a long-time member and supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and was an Eagle Scout and a Scoutmaster of Troop 8 of Ridgewood. He was the band leader and trumpeter for Dad’s Night and Jamboree for the Ridgewood school system. He was a volunteer tax preparer for the IRS (VITA). He is survived by his wife Lesley (Wilcox) of Ridgewood, his children Robert of Los Angeles, California, Bruce of North Haledon, Sherry Capwell of Wilmington, Delaware, and Eric of Oakland. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sister Doris Drake. Arrangements were made by C.C. Van Emburgh, Inc. in Ridgewood. Box 3170, Union, NJ 07083. Leona May Blake, nee Sellers, of Macomb, Illinois, formerly of Ridgewood and Sudbury, Massachusetts, died May 1. She was 97. She received her RN from Harlem Hospital in 1939. She is survived by her children Pamella McLean of Macomb, Illinois and Gordon Blake of Secaucus, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Marion Phillips of Scotsville, New York. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Gordon Blake. John F. Hughes of Ridgewood died May 4. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He worked for over 20 years for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, after working for ABC News. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church in Ridgewood. He was a member of the Hobbyists. He is survived by his wife Margaret “Peggy” Hughes and his children John Hughes Jr., Carol Thomas, and Marianne McGuinness. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood. Richard A. LaVigna of Waldwick died May 5. He was 82. He was a U.S. Air Force and Navy veteran. He served during the Korean War. He is also survived by his siblings Virginia Bradbury and Theodore LaVigna. Maryann Julia Maeder, nee Kuzora, of Midland Park died May 6. She was 69. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Midland Park CERT. She is survived by her children Star Stokes, Ondrea Bell Triggiani Ellatakunee, and Tanya Rose Cicerale, and nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Charles W. Ellen Frances Monaghan, nee Archibald, of Mahwah, formerly of Oakland, died May 8. She was a life time member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Rosary Society, and was a member of the Ramapo Mountain Lakes Country Club. She is survived by sons Kenneth G. Jr. Thomas A., Christopher J., Mark F., Maryellen Mullikin, James P., and Stephen R. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and sisters Patricia McCabe and Sister Georgellen (Mary Lucy) Archibald, RSHM. She was predeceased by her infant son Brian Joseph. Jean Helen Smith of Midland Park died May 3. She was 86. She is survived by her husband Charles and her children Patrice Todd, Lisa Barrows, Kathy Gregory, and Peter Violante, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Nunzia Rosa Tommaso of Waldwick, formerly of Italy, died May 2. She was 100. She is survived by her children Salvatore Ezio Tommaso, Anna Maria Inturrisi, Ida Longo, Francesco Tommaso, and Renato Tommaso. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband Francesco. retiring, he was a self-employed painter with VanderWall Brothers of Wyckoff. He was a member of Abundant Life Reformed Church in Wyckoff. He is survived by his wife Clara (nee Van Meekren) VanderWall, his sons Nicholas VanderWall Jr. and James VanderWall, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Martin and Melvin. Helen Van Hassel, nee Kamp, of Wyckoff died May 1. She was 86. She graduated from Eastern Academy and from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, with a degree in journalism. She was a competitive speed skater. In 1943, she skated in Madison Square Garden and won the Girls Intermediate Derby Silver Skates. While at Hood College, she participated in many activities and sports. In 1949, she was elected the Hood College White Blazer Girl, the honor given to the most outstanding overall student in the graduating class. As a White Blazer Girl, she was a charter member of the Hood College Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. She had served as a youth group leader, band parent, Girl Scout leader, basketball cheerleader, advisor, confidante, and teacher. After she raised her children, she attended William Paterson University to obtain her teaching certification in English and English as a Second Language. While at William Paterson, she was inducted into the Beta Chi Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta, an honor and professional society in the field of education. After receiving her certification, she taught at both Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools, retiring in 1995. She served on the board of directors for the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat in Wyckoff and was a member of the retreat’s auxiliary, where she worked each year for both its Country Fair and Fashion Show. She was a member of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and worked in Kurth Cottage for years. She was a member and served as president of the Holland Christian Home Auxiliary. She was a member of the Wyckoff Reformed Church. She played in the Joyful Noise Bell Choir, was active on the Outreach Committee, and played the carillon on Sunday mornings. After joining the Wyckoff Reformed Church, she remained a member of the Priscilla Circle of Second Reformed Church, now Abundant Life. She is survived by her husband Dick Van Hassel, her children Leann Mehrer of Dickinson, North Dakota, Abram Van Hassel of Westtown, New York, Richard Van Hassel of Centennial, Colorado, and Barbara Van Hassel of Wanaque, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers William Kamp of Wayne and Barney Kamp of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was predeceased by her parents Barney and Sietzke Kamp, her sisters Gertrude Foster and Sally Fyffe, and her brothers John, Sidney, Conrad, Daniel, and Arthur Kamp.
