HILT announces May events Highlights in Leisure Time will host Peggy Norris and Joe Suplicki on May 9. Their 10 a.m. program highlighting Ridgewood’s 15 parks will be held in the Ridgewood Village Hall Community Center located at 131 North Maple Avenue. Suplicki, a trustee of the Ridgewood Historical Society, has been the village historian for the last 10 years, along with his wife, Norris, who is the Ridgewood Library’s local history and genealogy librarian. On May 14, HILT will travel to the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon, New York. The trip will feature lunch and entertainment by the Bronx Wanderers as they recreate the magic of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The bus will depart from Graydon Pool at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $50 for HILT members and $55 for non-members. YMCA announces camp programs This summer, the Ridgewood YMCA will offer day and resident camps for give children and teens in the area. YMCA camp programs offer unique experiences with an opportunity to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, discover new interests, and create memories that last a lifetime. Programs include Y’s Kidz for campers who are three through six, Camp Pamacka for individuals who are six through 13, Teen Trip for those who are 11 through 15, and YMCA Camp Bernie, the Y’s overnight resident camp in the Schooley Mountains of Warren County. The Ridgewood Y also offers an International Camp Program for youths in grades 10 through 12. Participants in this summer’s ICP will visit the Dominican Republic, where they will build and repair homes for families in need. A leading nonprofit committed to nurturing the potential of youth, the Y has been a leader in providing summer camp opportunities for nearly 130 years. Dog license and rabies clinic announced The Ridgewood Health Department will sponsor a free dog rabies clinic on Wednesday, May 15. The clinic will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at the village recycling center located on Glen Avenue. Dogs must be leashed or contained in a carrying case. Dog licenses for 2013 must be renewed during the month of June. A $20 late fee will be charged for all renewals received after June 30. Renewals will be sent via e-mail. Those without an e-mail address may call the health department at (201) 670-5500, extension 503 to have a form sent
via U.S. mail, or visit the health department at 131 North Maple Avenue weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months of age or older to be registered with the town where they reside. In order to receive a license, dog owners must present proof of rabies vaccination with an expiration date not before May 1, 2014. Discounts are available for spayed or neutered pets; proof of spaying or neutering is required. Volunteers sought for memorial observance American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood-Ho-Ho-Kus is seeking volunteers to assist in placing American flags at the graves of military veterans on Saturday, May 11. Interested citizens, Scout troops, and community organizations are welcome to participate. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood. Veterans invited to try yoga The Ridgewood YMCA, in cooperation with Kula for Karma, will offer a free six-week yoga program for veterans on Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. beginning May 7. Yoga is used by soldiers and athletes to enhance focus and flexibility, and is often used as a complement to medical treatment for those suffering with post-traumatic stress. This one-hour weekly class will explore basic poses to strengthen and balance the body, therapeutic poses to restore the body, and guided deep relaxation and visualization techniques to manage injuries and trauma. Participants will also learn breathing techniques to calm and invigorate the body, manage mood, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, and meditation to focus and discipline the mind. No previous experience with yoga is necessary. Modifications of poses will be taught for any participants with specific physical challenges. Men invited to retreat The men’s retreat group of Saint Catharine Church in Glen Rock and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood invites men in the area to participate in the 2013 reflective retreat set for May 17 through 19. This event will be held at the Loyola Retreat House in Morristown. The retreat house offers participants time to experience their faith. OPRC announces events The Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s historic Old Paramus Reformed Church will sponsor a a musical program on Wednesday, May 8 at 1:15 p.m. at the church. “Let the
Music Resound,” will feature concert pianist and music educator Linda Sweetman-Waters and concert trumpeter Rick White. Sweetman-Waters and White will perform selections including classical, Broadway, and sacred music. Devotions for this meeting will be presented by Anita Blauvelt, and an offering will benefit the American Bible Society, which has designated this contribution especially for American servicemen and women who have requested Bibles. The event is open to the public. Quilt Workshop Planned for May 11 Old Paramus Reformed Church’s ongoing Prayer Quilt Ministry welcomes new members to its workshop to tie a large number of quilts on May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. The quilts, given to anyone who can benefit from the comfort they bring, are created with prayer. Many more prayers are added as each additional knot is tied by the church family. Those who receive a quilt are able to be “covered by the prayers of the people.” The workshop will be held in the church’s education building at 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. Two Piano Festival announced The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood invites music lovers of all ages to its Ninth Annual Two Piano Festival on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. This year’s concert will feature eight local artists playing in teams of two: Anita Gordon and Ana Berschadsky; Jacqueline Schiller-Audi and Diane Battersby; Deborah Goodell and Yukar Shikani; Angelyn MacWilliams and Deborah Goodell; and Angelyn MacWilliams and Dotty Kane. The festival will begin with the Mozart “Sonata in D Major” and continue with several 19th and 20th century compositions, including Grieg’s “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen,” Saint-Saens’ “Danse Macabre,” Milhaud’s “Scaramouche,” and a suite by Richard Rodney Bennett. The Unitarian Society’s first Two Piano Festival was held in 2003. The Society had received the gift of a Mason and Hamlin piano upon the death of one of its long-time members, Sidney Babcock of Ridgewood. Babcock’s son, Sidney Jr., suggested the piano be used to help fund a scholarship for piano students, and the festival was established to support scholarships offered by the Professional Music Teachers’ Guild of New Jersey.
