Sheila Brogan remains school board president
by John Koster The Ridgewood Board of Education reorganized last week and decided that Sheila Brogan would remain at the helm of the board. Vince Loncto will remain the board’s vice president. Michele Lenhard, a former Ridgewood Board of Education president, who received 1,432 votes in the April election, and James Morgan, who received 1,349 votes in his first full three-year term, were sworn in to new three-year terms on the board. Both ran as uncontested incumbents. Morgan had won the single available one-year term in a contest with former Ridgewood Board of Education member Robert Hutton in last year’s election. The board also acknowledged the voters’ approval of the school budget with 1,165 votes in favor and 929 opposed. Ridgewood is one of the few area school districts that opted not to move its election to coincide with the November general election. Last year, boards of education had the opportunity to move their school trustee elections from April to November. Districts that moved their elections to November are no longer required to submit their school budgets to the voters for approval as long as those budgets remain within the state-mandated
cap, which is currently two percent. In other board business, the board honored Jared Rosenfeld, student representative, for his service with the board during the 2012-13 school year. The trustees noted Rosenfeld’s achievements as a Gold Medal winner in tennis at the International Maccabi Games in Israel and his Ridgewood EMT certification at the age of 16, with the John Stokeley Ties Award for 2011 for the student member who showed the greatest leadership. The board of education also approved the continued presence of student representatives, noting that those representatives will be allowed to leave the meetings at 10 p.m. and will be excluded from executive sessions. The public is also excluded from executive sessions, which include confidential discussions of negotiations and personnel matters.
