Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 1, 2013 Ridgewood Violinist provides ‘world tour’ of string music by John Koster “Any requests?” David Podles asked at the end of his violin concert at the Ridgewood Library. “More!” someone shouted from the back of the audience. Podles smiled and obliged. Newcomers to classical music and experts alike were charmed by the concert of world-favorite short violin pieces offered at the library on April 21. Podles, who began playing the violin at the age of seven in Latvia, took his listeners on a “tour” of string music that covered three centuries. The voyage began with “Winter” from Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” followed by the “Air on the G String” by Johann Sebastian Bach, a Bach scherzo, a gentle movement by Josef Haydn, and one section from “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ludwig van Beethoven was represented by the “Turkish Rondo,” a piano piece transposed for violin. “The Meditation” from “Thais” by Jules Massenet, Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance #5,” and “Ave Maria” by Franz Schubert ended the selection of well-known pieces for the violinist, followed by more modern pieces by Henryk (continued on page 8) David Podles The Ridgewood Village Council has adopted a resolution approving a Municipal Financial Advisory Committee. The new group was established by a 4-1 vote at last week’s council meeting. Council Member Thomas Riche cast the dissenting vote on the resolution. Riche had previously stated that the council is the body in charge of financial oversight and Finance Advisory Committee established by village council that exposing Ridgewood’s professional staff to a second oversight group might be a nuisance for the staff. The resolution was adopted without comment. The committee will provide review, advice, and recommendation to the Ridgewood Village Council on financial (continued on page 12)
