Botanical Garden holds Plant Sale The New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands will hold its annual Plant Sale May 4, 5, and 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will feature an array of perennials, annuals, hanging baskets, vegetables, herbs, and dwarf and full-size trees and shrubs. Admission and parking are free. This annual event will be held in and around the historic Carriage House Visitor Center on the grounds of the New Jersey State Botanical Garden located on Morris Road in Ringwood State Park. On Friday, May 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., NJBG members will be treated to the Plant-Sale Preview Party, an exclusive members-only reception during which many of the choicest plants are traditionally sold. Non-member visitors to the Friday night preview may participate by becoming members at the gate. Master Gardeners and volunteers from the NJBG/Skylands Association, a member-supported non-profit organization that works with the state to preserve and protect the garden and its historic structures, will be on hand to answer questions and help shoppers make selections. Membership in NJBG/Skylands Association includes admission and benefits at numerous gardens and arboreta in the U.S., discounts in the gift shop, use of the reference library, volunteer opportunities, a quarterly journal, guest passes for Manor House tours, and more. Special needs baseball instruction offered The Upper Saddle River Baseball Association and USR Recreation Commission will sponsor a structured, small group baseball clinic for special needs children in kindergarten through grade six. The clinic is free of charge and Upper Saddle River residency is not required. During the program, attendees will warm up, run drills, and play a brief game. The clinic will include breaks and other accommodations. Each participant requires a parent shadow for all clinics. All players will receive a T-shirt. The program is free. Volunteers sought for memorial observance American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood-Ho-Ho-Kus is seeking volunteers to assist in placing American flags at the graves of military veterans on Saturday, May 11. Interested citizens, Scout troops, and community organizations are welcome to participate. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood. Band wraps up Concert Series The Waldwick Band will conclude its 2012-13 Winter Season with a free concert on May 5 at The Village School, 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick. This concert will begin at 3 p.m. Principal saxophonist Lewis Archer will be the featured instrumentalist. Archer will perform the “Rhapsodie for Alto Saxophone” by Claude Debussy in an arrangement by the band’s conductor, Edmund A. Moderacki who is celebrating his 35th year as music director. Moderacki will open the concert with its 2012-13 signature piece, George Gershwin’s “Strike up the Band” in an arrangement by Warren Barker. He will conduct the ensemble in Cesar Giovannini’s “Overture in B-flat,” “Procession of the Sardar” by Ippolitov-Ivanov, and selections from Lerner and Lowe’s “Gigi.” As part of the Waldwick Band’s observation of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the band will play arrangements of two period pieces: David Holsinger’s “On a Hymn Tune” by Phillip Bliss and Percy Grainger’s “Spoon River” based upon an American fiddle tune. Veterans invited to try yoga The Ridgewood YMCA, in cooperation with Kula for Karma, will offer a free six-week yoga program for veterans on Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. beginning May 7. Yoga is used by soldiers and athletes to enhance focus and flexibility, and is often used as a complement to medical treatment for those suffering with post-traumatic stress. This one-hour weekly class will explore basic poses to strengthen and balance the body, therapeutic poses to restore the body, and guided deep relaxation and visualization techniques to manage injuries and trauma. Participants will also learn breathing techniques to calm and invigorate the body, manage mood, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, and meditation to focus and discipline the mind. No previous experience with yoga is necessary. Modifications of poses will be taught for any participants with specific physical challenges. Children’s retreat host events The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat will host its Annual Fashion Show and Dinner on Tuesday, May 14. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Brownstone Inn, 351 West Broadway in Paterson. This year’s fundraiser will feature fashions by Dress Barn and a special auction. Tickets are $40. On June 6, the ECCR will host a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of New Jersey. The ship will depart from Lincoln Harbor Marine in Weehawken and sail the Hudson River.
