May 1, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 19 Ridgewood Notes OPRC announces events The Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s historic Old Paramus Reformed Church will hold its annual Flea Market on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Flea Market will be held in the church’s barrier-free education building at 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. The sale will feature gently-used items, decorative items, glassware, ceramics, furniture, books, jewelry, small appliances, household items, electronics, toys, baby items, and tools. Baked goods, refreshments, and lunch will be available. Admission is free. On Wednesday, May 8, the Women’s Guild will sponsor a musical program at 1:15 p.m. at the church. “Let the Music Resound,” will feature concert pianist and music educator Linda Sweetman-Waters and concert trumpeter Rick White. Sweetman-Waters and White will perform selections including classical, Broadway, and sacred music. Devotions for this meeting will be presented by Anita Blauvelt, and an offering will benefit the American Bible Society, which has designated this contribution especially for American servicemen and women who have requested Bibles. The event is open to the public. Quilt Workshop Planned for May 11 Old Paramus Reformed Church’s ongoing Prayer Quilt Ministry welcomes new members to its workshop to tie a large number of quilts on May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. The quilts, given to anyone who can benefit from the comfort they bring, are created with prayer. Many more prayers are added as each additional knot is tied by the church family. Those who receive a quilt are able to be “covered by the prayers of the people.” The workshop will be held in the church’s education building at 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. Two Piano Festival announced The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood invites music lovers of all ages to its Ninth Annual Two Piano Festival on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. This year’s concert will feature eight local artists playing in teams of two: Anita Gordon and Ana Berschadsky; Jacqueline Schiller-Audi and Diane Battersby; Deborah Goodell and Yukar Shikani; Angelyn MacWilliams and Deborah Goodell; and Angelyn MacWilliams and Dotty Kane. The festival will begin with the Mozart “Sonata in D Major” and continue with several 19th and 20th century compositions, including Grieg’s “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen,” Saint-Saens’ “Danse Macabre,” Milhaud’s “Scaramouche,” and a suite by Richard Rodney Bennett. The Unitarian Society’s first Two Piano Festival was held in 2003. The Society had received the gift of a Mason and Hamlin piano upon the death of one of its long-time members, Sidney Babcock of Ridgewood. Babcock’s son, Sidney Jr., suggested the piano be used to help fund a scholarship for piano students, and the festival was established to support scholarships offered by the Professional Music Teachers’ Guild of New Jersey. Senior center sponsors varied programs Ridgewood Recreation has announced a new session of activities and programs for seniors. Events will be held at the Community Center in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. The slate of activities includes fitness programs such as Silver Strength and Motion, Zumba, Volt Fitness for men, Jazzercise, chair yoga, and Yoga Fit. Classes will also include mindful meditation and short stories, Chinese brush painting, knitting, and crocheting. Hobbyists Unlimited presents movies on the first Tuesday of the month, and the Community Center is open each Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. for those interested in organized card games. Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch will be offered in two sessions: Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. These classes begin April 30 and May 2, respectively. School hosts Gigantic Garage Sale Ridgewood’s Orchard Elementary School will host a Gigantic Garage Sale on Saturday, May 11. The sale, which will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be held rain or shine. Families from the Orchard community have donated hundreds of “treasures” from their homes to be sold at this fundraising event for the school. Items for sale will include children’s clothing, sporting goods, toys, infant gear, costumes, household items, books, furniture, and jewelry. The event will include a Bake Sale with homemade and gourmet store goodies for a mid-morning or afternoon snack. Orchard School is located at 230 Demarest Street in Ridgewood.
