Royle Scholarship applications available Bergen Highlands-Ramsey Rotary Club Awards Chairman John F. Royle has announced that application forms for the annual John Royle Rotary Awards are now available at the guidance offices of Ramsey, Mahwah, and Northern Highlands high schools. Applications may also be obtained by calling Royle at (201) 529-4919, or by visiting the Bergen Highlands/Ramsey Rotary Club website, www.bergenhighlandsrotary.org. The awards are named for Royle’s father, who was a Rotarian for over 35 years. The scholarships are based on need, ability, and contributions to school and community. These awards consist of $1,250 at the beginning of the recipient’s freshman year and another $1,250 at the beginning of the recipient’s sophomore year. The awards are offered annually to graduating seniors who are going on to higher education and who reside in the area served by the Bergen Highlands-Ramsey Rotary Club: Allendale, Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. The awards are offered to all seniors regardless of other scholarships applied for or granted. Applications must be completed in full and delivered to Mr. Royle before April 30, 2013. Flower Sale & Gift Boutique set The de Snoep Winkel Gift Shop & Tea Room at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff will hold its annual Flower Sale & Gift Boutique on March 22 and 23. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the auditorium. In addition to the flowers, Dutch items, chocolates, gift items, and accessories will be available for purchase. Wind Symphony presents ‘Fantasies and Folksongs’ On Sunday March 24, the Ramsey Wind Symphony and Music Director Charles Yassky will present “Fantasies and Folksongs” at 3 p.m. at Northern Highlands Regional School at 298 Hillside Avenue in Allendale. Anthony Mazzocchi, professor of trombone at Montclair University, will be featured in two pieces, “Capriccio” by Frank Gulino and “Morceau Symphonique” by Alexandre Guilman. In keeping with the theme for the afternoon, the program will also feature Norman Dello Joio’s “Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn” and the American concert band classic, “Fantasy on Civil War Themes” by Jerry Bilik. Other selections include themes from “War Horse” by John Williams and music by Gustav Holst and John Philip Sousa. General admission is $15. The cost for senior citizens and students is $10. Lions complete ramp
The Hoeland family of Waldwick thanks Greg Bjork and the Waldwick Lions Club for donating their valuable time and hard work in building a handicapped ramp for Amanda. The Hoelands also thank Jim Fallon and Kuiken Brothers Lumber for donating all the building supplies, and all of the volunteers who worked on this project. The family recently moved to Waldwick, and this was just one of the wonderful ways the Waldwick community welcomed and embraced them. It is now so easy to get Amanda to and from the school bus and/or her van. These simple tasks were a chore prior to the installation of the ramp.

Waldwick Band opens Concert Series The Waldwick Band will continue its 2012-13 Winter Season with a concert on Sunday, March 17 at The Village School, 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick. This free concert will begin at 3 p.m. Featured soloist Ann Partridge, a community band and orchestra player in Bergen and Rockland counties for over 30 years, has played with the Glen Rock Pops Orchestra, the Ridgewood Concert Band, the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, the Ramapo Wind Symphony, the Rockland County Concert Band, and the Teaneck Community Band. Last year, she organized a flute and piccolo workshop by members of the West Point Band for area flute players. Partridge will solo on the piccolo on Robert Starer’s “Fan-
tasy,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and Arthur Pryor’s novelty, “The Whistler and His Dog.” Music Director Edmund A. Moderacki will open the concert with its 2012-13 signature piece, George Gershwin’s “Strike up the Band.” Moderacki will conduct the ensemble in Alfred Reed’s “First Suite,” “Prometheus Overture” by Beethoven, and selections from Broadway’s “Man of La (continued on page 24)
