This prestigious award is presented by Martial Arts World Magazine. Stevens is being recognized for his dedication and unique contributions to the martial arts industry. He will be honored at a black-tie event that will be part of the 2013 International Martial Arts EXPO in Orlando, Florida in November. Stevens started his training in 1973 under the legendary Grand Master Richard Chun who is credited as one of the first teachers from Korea to bring Tae Kwon Do to the United States. Stevens became one of Chun’s prized students and instructors. Stevens’ style of instruction is rooted in tradition, but incorporates current practices within the martial arts. “If you feel confident in your abilities to defend yourself, conquering insecurities in your daily lives becomes much easier,” Stevens said. He strives to help individuals succeed through honest assessment and hard work both physically and mentally. When it was time for Stevens to start a family, he moved to New Jersey in 1984. As one of Grand Master Chun’s most gifted students, Stevens holds a 6th degree black belt and established his own school in Glen Rock. He is particularly interested in working with young people. A noted expert on preventing bullying and teas- Stevens to receive International Hall of Fame Award ing, Stevens helps children understand when it is appropriate to defend themselves and when it is better to just remove themselves from a bad situation. He requires all of his black belt students to become certified in CPR as part of their social and civic responsibility. He teaches or has taught TaeKwonDo for the recreation departments of many New Jersey municipalities, including Tenafly, Fair Lawn, Englewood, and Leonia, and offers free seminars covering health, fitness, and self-defense issues. Within the martial arts community, Stevens serves as a consultant and judge for the United States Martial Arts Team. “It is great to see that many of my students have become responsible members of our community,” Stevens said.
