Foundation celebrates 30 years of service The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation was founded 30 years ago to honor seven year-old Emmanuel Vizzoni, who lost his battle with Burkett’s lymphoma. During his illness, Emmanuel’s parents, Susan and Joseph Vizzoni, experienced the enormous emotional and financial hardships that families endure when a child is diagnosed with cancer. In 1983, two years after Emmanuel’s death, the Vizzoni family established ECF to assist other families experiencing the trauma of childhood cancer. ECF’s mission is to provide a variety of specialized services, at no charge, to any New Jersey family facing the challenges of caring for a child with cancer. This is accomplished through: professional in-home counseling; advocacy on behalf of the families; material support such as food, clothing, toys, and household items; and emergency financial relief. Families are served statewide through centers located in Scotch Plains, Midland Park, Wall, and Woodbury. The local center’s number is (201) 612-8118. To help commemorate this milestone anniversary, “like” ECF on Facebook in June when the organization will be “Celebrating 30 Years in 30 Days” at www.facebook.com/ EmmanuelCancerFoundation. Sierra Club to host Belton Tom Belton, author of “Protecting NJ’s Environment: From Cancer Alley to the New Garden State,” will discuss key environmental issues in New Jersey at the June 25 meeting of the Sierra Club North Jersey Group. This 7 p.m. program will be held at the Louis Bay 2nd Public Library located at 345 Lafayette Avenue in Hawthorne. Belton is a scientist with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection who has investigated the impact of toxic chemicals on humans and wildlife. His program is free and open to the public. oncology research – which were among the first to be established in the state – will also be based in the new building. Plans are still being finalized as to the additional services that will be housed in the building. “We are indebted to our generous supporters for helping us to build a premier medical research community at Valley, where shared resources and collaboration among physicians, researchers, and scientists can take place within one facility,” said Anastasios Kozaitis, president of The Valley Hospital Foundation. “With state-of-the-art research capabilities, we will be able to house an expanded biorepository and recruit additional distinguished physicians, attract grant-funding opportunities, and strengthen collaborations with national and international research institutes.” “This building is ideally suited for medical research because we can make use of existing laboratories used by the blood bank, which we will also modernize and maintain for cutting-edge research activities,” added Maria Mediago, vice president of facilities management at Valley. According to Mediago, the building will undergo interior renovations to create physician practice and staff offices, examination rooms, a lobby, employee lounge, and waiting areas. The exterior façade will be upgraded as will landscaping, fencing, parking, and other features. Design of the new facility is under way.
