June 26, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 17 Ridgewood Notes Waterfront Lifeguard Training available The Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation, an authorized American Red Cross provider, is offering Waterfront Lifeguard Training for swimmers who are 15 and older. The 32-hour certification class will be held at Graydon Pool at 259 North Maple Avenue. Candidates for the class must pass the fitness and endurance test set for Monday, July 1 at 10 a.m. Participants must swim 550 yards, tread water (legs only -- arms over head), and retrieve a submerged object. The class will meet July 2 through 31 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The course fee is $320. (Class will not meet on July 4.) Concerts begin at 8:30 p.m. The Thunderhill Band will present a concert featuring country and western music on June 25. This event is sponsored by Boiling Springs Savings Bank and Tarvin Realtors. On June 27, Lou Gallo and the Very Hungry Band will present a “Children’s Evening.” The program is sponsored by Clemente Orthodontics and Ridgewood Dentistry – Warren Boardman, DMD. Island Breeze will perform calypso, reggae, and Latin jazz on July 2. This event is sponsored by the Ridgwood AM Rotaty Club and the Village of Ridgewood. On July 9, the Bobby Byrne Show will include the music of Broadway and more. TD Bank is the sponsor for this show. The Kootz will present classic rock of the ‘60s through ‘90s, and pop and blues tunes on July 11. The program is sponsored by Wostbrock Home and Floors and Coldwell Bank Residential Brokerage Group. The McVey Family will perform a tribute to Marvin Hamlisch on July 16. Park West Tavern and the Feeney Funeral Home will sponsor the event. This June marks the 55th Anniversary of the Frank Kasschau Memorial Shell. Each week, a variety of family enterainment is offered. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The Kasschau Shell is located in Ridgewood’s Veterans Field behind the Ridgewood Public Library at 125 North Maple Avenue. Parking is free. In addition, many local organizations and businesses provide the funds to support these programs. CD donations sought Ridgewood’s newly renovated Community Center recently received a generous donation of an Antique Apparatus jukebox that holds approximately 1,000 CDs. In order to fully utilize this charitable gift, Ridgewood’s Parks and Recreation Department is asking village residents for new or gently-used CDs from all musical genres to help build a comprehensive music selection. Great Ridgewood Duck Derby announced The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with Jacobsen Landscape Contractors of Midland Park, will host the Great Ridgewood Duck Derby at Graydon Pool on Sunday, July 14. (Rain date: July 21.) The national event, “Come Alive Outside,” will feature an afternoon of family fun including musical entertainment with Very Hungry Musician Lou Gallo, beach games, a sand sculpture contest, duck decorating, Face Capades face painting, and the rubber duck race. The cost is $5 per person and includes a barbecue ticket and one rubber duck. “Come Alive Outside” was launched in 2010 by Jim Paluch in an effort to combat the sedentary, indoor lifestyle. Lee recognized Representative Scott Garrett (NJ-05) recognized Ridgewood High School freshman Minha Lee (pictured above) for participating in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. Garrett presented this year’s participants with their certificates and awards at a ceremony at Ramapo College. Garrett congratulated Lee for placing fifth in this year’s event. He called Lee an incredibly talented young man and one of northern New Jersey’s best young artists, adding that it was a pleasure to have him showcase his work for the Fifth District. Ridgewood’s competitors also included Gabrielle Fink, a freshman at the Bergen County Academies; Joanne Son, a junior at the Bergen County Academies, who received Honorable Mention for her entry; and Emma Brennan, a sophomore at Bergen County Academies.
