Glen Rock
High school senior charged with heroin sales
by John Koster An 18-year-old Glen Rock High School senior has been jailed after being charged with selling heroin. The youth also faces other drug-related charges. He was lodged in Bergen County Jail in lieu of $100,000 with no 10 percent minimum. Detective James Calaski said the suspect did not have any heroin in his possession when he was arrested at Glen Rock High School on June 11, but that a search of his bedroom revealed marijuana, narcotics paraphernalia, and a large amount of cash. Detective Calaski said the arrest followed a substantial investigation in cooperation with the Bergen County Prosecutors’ Office Narcotics Task Force and that the suspect had involved a juvenile in an alleged drug deal. The full list of charges includes possession of a dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia,
and employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime. Detective Calaski acknowledged that heroin is a problem in Bergen County and that a number of overdoses have been reported recently. He said he hoped the arrest would send out the message: Do not bring heroin to Glen Rock.
Prehistoric garden dedicated
The rock from which Glen Rock takes half its name is a 570 ton glacial erratic that was deposited when the last glaciers withdrew from northern New Jersey about 25,000 years ago. The Native American Lenape people called it Pamachapuka, and the rock served them as a marker of a ceremonial area. In partnership with Alan McCullough, regional director of Almstead Tree and Shrub Care, the Thielke Arboretum in Glen Rock has now added to the many plants already onsite that the Lenape used. The resulting ‘prehistoric garden’ was dedicated recently. Pictured at the dedication ceremony are Alan McCullough, Richard Almstead, Carol Thielke, and Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren.
