This year’s theme is “It’s Still a Grand Old Flag.” Float contest categories include Best Float, Best Decorated Wagon, and Most Patriotic Entry. Tickets to the Fourth of July fundraising contests have been mailed to residents. The contests, which underwrite the cost of the parade, will feature prizes such as a 5,500 watt generator sponsored by Ruth Weitzman, Heidt Insurance Agency, and Glen Rock Hardware; Kilroy’s Gift Cards; a painting by Glen Rock resident Sydney Anne Kobuskie; an autographed Jets football; a gift certificate from Mail & More; U.S. flags donated by Patricia Zengel and Ed Szulis; a Davia Restaurant gift card, handmade jewelry by Beth Fernandez; and Ikea gift baskets. Tickets may be purchased at Heidt Agency, Glen Rock Hardware, and on select days outside of Kilroy’s. Friends open Plant Exchange The Friends of Glen Rock recently announced the opening of the Plant Exchange at the recycling center at 473 Doremus Avenue. The Plant Exchange offers Glen Rock residents the option of planting surplus plants from their property at the exchange. The Glen Rock Plant Exchange is open the same hours as the recycling center: Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center and exchange are closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. Library announces teen programs The Teen Summer Reading Program, “Beneath the Surface” is under way at the Glen Rock Public Library. Participants are invited to keep track of their reading and become eligible for prizes and gift cards. The library will also donate 25 cents to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund for every hour of reading recorded. Other programs planned for teens are gaming afternoons, yoga sessions, a hula hoop making workshop, tie-dying, karaoke, duct tape crafts, after-hours card tournaments, workshops for songwriting, robotics, magic tricks, and crafts. Teens are welcome to view “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and “Easy A.” Programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Glen Rock Library. Studio Stars to be presented Studio Stars, the Glen Rock Community School’s theater camp, invites individuals who are ages eight through 16. This three-week summer program will begin June 24. Studio Stars provides a unique theater experience, including opportunities to sing, dance, and act in an original production. The program is designed to foster self-confidence, teamwork, and self-esteem. The experience also includes stage presence, understanding stage direction, scene development, character development, and delivery of dialogue. Directors Ron Onorato and Carmen Boscia have written, directed, and produced Studio Stars for 25 years. The program is located in the air-conditioned auditorium at Central Elementary School. The session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon from June 24 through July 12. The final performance will take place July 12. Summer Bereavement Group slated The parishes of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Catharine will jointly sponsor a Bereavement Support Group beginning July 10. The eight-week program will meet on Wednesdays through Aug. 28 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The program will be held in the Ministry Center Meeting Room at Saint Catharine’s located at 905 South Maple Avenue in Glen Rock. Meetings will offer support to those going through the grieving process. The group stresses confidentiality and is open to all. Textbooks available at the library The Glen Rock Library has Glen Rock elementary, middle, and high school textbooks available for use in the library. Borough offers seniors services Glen Rock seniors are reminded that the borough provides bus transportation for residents age 65 and up and for disabled adults who cannot drive. Exhibitors sought The Glen Rock Library, 315 Rock Road, is looking for interesting, antique, artistic, whimsical, beautiful, and/or unique collections.
