Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • June 19, 2013 DVD releases (continued from Restaurant page) Frayling on the film’s design, a visual essay on Arthur Bliss’ musical score, unused special effects footage, and a booklet featuring an essay about the film’s production and lasting significance. “Of Human Bondage” (Kino Classics) is the movie that established Bette Davis as a star. Dropped by Universal, she went on to appear in a number of undistinguished Warner Brothers melodramas, always clamoring for better scripts. In 1934, she was loaned out to RKO to appear in John Cromwell’s adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel. Leslie Howard (“Gone with the Wind”) stars as Philip Carey, a British medical student who becomes infatuated with a waitress named Mildred Rogers (Davis). Undeterred by Mildred’s obvious contempt for him, Philip lavishes his affection upon the tawdry woman, allowing his personal and professional life to disintegrate as a consequence of her sadistic whims. Many actresses turned down the role of Mildred with the fear that portraying such an unsympa- thetic character would hurt their careers, but Davis gamely tackled it, one of many tough, strong-willed heroines she would play in future films. Bonuses include a featurelength documentary about Maugham’s life and career. “Web Therapy: The Complete Second Season” (Entertainment One) focuses on Fiona Wallice (Lisa Kudrow), a therapist with little patience for her patients. Tired of hearing about people’s problems for 50 minutes, she devises an innovative new treatment -- the three-minute “therapeutic” video chat. The shorter sessions wind up being largely about her. Kudrow has built a career on portraying narcissistic women. Fiona is such a character, but the ease with which Kudrow’s Fiona dismisses the very real concerns of her patients is hilarious. She never strives for the joke. She simply inhabits Fiona. Viewers sense the impatience, the boredom, and the fact that she would rather be picking out tomatoes in a supermarket. Second season guest stars include Meryl Streep, Conan O’Brien, Alan Cumming, David Schwimmer, Selma Blair, Rashida Jones, Rosie O’Donnell, Molly Shannon, and Minnie Driver. Extras on the two-disc DVD release include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and a director’s cut with Streep and O’Brien.
