Earth Machines now available Following the success of the Bergen County Utilities Authority’s workshop, “The Benefits of Backyard Composting,” the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department is making the composting device known as “The Earth Machine” available to village residents. The Earth Machine is an 80-gallon tub made from recycled plastic that is durable, rodent resistant, lightweight, and can fit in a car. The composter offers a convenient form of recycling that can be done in one’s own backyard. Home composting enriches garden soil, reduces the need for fertilizers, and can divert as much as 30 percent of household waste from the garbage can. To purchase an Earth Machine, stop by The Stable at 259 North Maple Avenue, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The cost of a composter is $53 and includes a home composting handbook and a compost pail. Checks should be made payable to the Bergen County Utilities Authority. For more information, call (201) 670-5560.
