The Ridgewood Police Department participated in the Pascack Valley Jr. Police Academy Class 13, recently. This year, as part of a pilot program, the Academy run by Washington Township, Hillsdale, and Westwood police departments was opened up to Ridgewood students. During the course of the week, students learned what it takes to become a law enforcement officer and the different aspects of policing. Students were treated to demonstrations by the New Jersey National Guard, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Customs

The Ridgewood Village Council has appointed seven members of the new committee that will provide financial advice to the governing body. The committee will meet once a month and operate in an advisory capacity. Ridgewood Councilman Thomas Riche voted “no,” as he indicated he would at the appointment session in late June. He said the financial management of the village is the responsibility of the elected council members and the professionals they supervise. Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli was appointed as the seated council’s liaison to the financial committee, and Chief Financial Officer Steve Sanzari will be a member of the group. The three-year members will be Nancy Johansen, a financial and public accounting professional; Robert Muller, a municipal bond and public finance specialist; and Kevin

Shea, a consultant who assists companies in trouble. The two-year members will be Roberta Sonenfeld and Janice Willet. The single-year members will be Richard Cundiff, an attorney, and I. Malcolm Highet, an executive with global management experience. Ridgewood had earlier heard from the Tiger Team, a volunteer group of residents with extensive financial experience. The group warned that property taxes were getting out of control and that government and school costs could impose a negative impact on Ridgewood if the increases were not restricted. The Ridgewood Village Council this year adopted a zero-tax increase municipal budget despite some concerns about a surplus that critics said might not be adequate to deal with emergencies such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012 or the late October snowstorm in 2011.
