Nancy Veronica De Gise, nee Giambattista, of Glen Rock died July 8. She was 94. She had worked as a seamstress for E&S Coatware in Paterson. She was a parishioner of Saint Catharine’s R.C. Church in Glen Rock. She was a member of the Saint Paul’s Seniors, Hawthorne’s Golden Circle, and the Blessed Sacrament Seniors. She is survived by her children Christina Titmas of Ramsey, Diane Malvano of Sussex, Joann Roca of Wanaque, and Elaine Lynn of Hawthorne. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and her sisters Mary, Amelia, and Stella. She was predeceased by her husband Pellegrino De Gise. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. A graduate of All Hallows High School in Bronx, New York, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Before retiring, he was a supervisor with Continental Insurance Company in New York City for many years. He was a member of Thomas Egan VFW Post 850 of Glen Rock. He was a parishioner of Saint Catharine R.C. Church in Glen Rock and a member of the Glen Rock Seniors Club. He is survived by his children Brian Farrell, Bob Farrell, and Kathleen Hutchings. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Doris (Gemon) Farrell. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home in Fair Lawn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering. Before retiring, he was an engineer for Picatinny Arsenal for 50 years. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Glen Rock, VFW Post 850 in Glen Rock, the Belles & Beaux Square Dancing Club, and Glen Rock Activities Unlimited. He is survived by his niece Barbara Dreyer and her husband Jim of Wyckoff, and his nephew Lawrence Carino of Florida. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie (nee Estler) and his sister Dorothy Carino. C. Channing Jackson III of Parkton, Maryland, formerly of Ridgewood, died June 27. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He graduated with a major in mathematics from Morgan State University. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, which he served for over 50 years. He had worked at GE and ITT. He retired as vice president of technical control and computer programming at American Broadcasting Company. He was instrumental in equipping the Bergen County school districts with their first computers systems. He is survived by his wife Joann, his daughters Lauren Stacia Jackson and Shelly D. Woessner, and his step-daughter Nicole Reeves. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, his brother Douglass D. Jackson, and his former wife and friend Carolyn S. Jackson. Memorial donations may be made to the United Way or an organization of choice. J. Walter “Walt” Keady Jr. of Ridgewood died July 2. He was 86. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Mount Carmel Grammar School and Saint Luke’s High School, where he excelled at basketball, and made school history by being named Bergen County high scoring player during his junior and senior years. He graduated from Manhattan College. He was a Certified Financial Planner for Investors Diversified Services and Ameriprise Financial. He retired at age 78. He was a member of the Ramsey Golf and Country Club and a coach for his sons’ Eagles baseball team. He also coached Mahwah Parks and Recreation basketball for his grandson. He is survived by his wife Mary and his children Claire, Kevin, Kathleen, John Walter, Christopher, and Mary Carroll. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and his sister Eleanor Askins. He was predeceased by his parents John Walter and Nellie (Meagher) Keady and his sister Angela. Arrangements were made by Vander Platt Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Church Eucharistic Ministry Team, 200 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey, NJ. James D. McGurty Jr. of Linden, formerly of Teaneck, Bergenfield, Glen Rock, and Hillside, died July 1. He was 91. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Teaneck High School and Fordham University, and earned a master’s in business administration degree from New York University. He was an accountant at National Distillers and Chemical Corp. (later Quantum Chemical Corp.) in midtown Manhattan. In the late 1980s, he was transferred to Frankfort, Kentucky as part of a reorganization and worked there for three years before retiring. After his retirement in 1988, he was a full-time volunteer at Saint Joseph’s Social Service Center in Elizabeth. His special contribution was Project Ready, an innovative program that helps the long-time unemployed prepare to reenter the workplace. He is survived by his wife Maureen and his chil-

She is survived by her sons Randy Schmitz, Craig Schmitz, Scott Schmitz, all of California, and Brett Schmitz of Hawthorne. She is also survived by six grandchildren, her brother Emil Holvoet of Glen Rock, and her companion Anthony Herse of Wyckoff. She was predeceased by her husband Donald. (continued from page 7) leadership, dedication, and vitality needed to bring the Post to new and greater heights as the Post moves into its 75th year starting on Sept. 23, 2014 and into its efforts for constructing a new Post home that is long overdue our veterans. “Thanks to the many, many people for their support over the years and their continued and anticipated support of Post Commander Bombace and the veterans of Post 192, our military, and their families. “May God continue to bless the United States of America, our veterans, and the military and their families, and watch over our military who are in ‘harm’s way.’” Bombace has been a Ridgewood resident since 1998. As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 2004-08, he served two tours of Iraq. At 26, he is one of the youngest leaders of Post 192 in recent years. “I hope to take over from Stan and fill his shoes as commander,” Bombace said the day after his appointment. “It was a quick turnover, and I’m learning the ropes.” In June, Bombace began his fifth year as a Ridgewood firefighter. He is a paid member of the department, which is manned by a combination of paid members and volunteers. His father, Mark Bombace, was born and raised in the village and is a former captain of the fire department. The new commander’s uncle, James Bombace, is a former Ridgewood fire chief.

(continued from page 9) South Maple Avenue between Ridgewood Avenue and Spring Avenue was closed to traffic during the investigation. The Ridgewood Police Department, Ridgewood EMS, and Valley Hospital paramedics turned out in response to the accident. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office is also involved in tracking the hit-and-run driver who abandoned the car. At press time, Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward was not available for comment, but the investigation is said to be proceeding. Maple Avenue is the main conduit between Route 208 in Fair Lawn and Route 17 in Ho-Ho-Kus and has been the scene of a number of fatal accidents involving pedestrians in past years, including several children.
