Bolger Center offers weight loss program The Bolger Fitness Center, a program of the Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA Bergen County, will kick off its next two-month “Be the Winner” program on Jan. 28. The program provides fitness instruction, nutrition strategies, and community support needed for healthy and successful weight-loss. Since “Be the Winner” was launched in 2010, 35 participants have lost a total of 288 pounds. Participants will meet Jan. 28 for weigh-ins and a group session with a registered dietitian. The program features eight 30-minute sessions with a certified personal trainer, 16 60-minute group exercise classes during weeknights, a follow-up group session with the registered dietitian and ongoing health and wellness support via e-mail, and access to over 70 free fitness classes, the strength and conditioning gym, and lap swimming. The winner (determined by largest percentage of body weight lost at the end of the program) receives a healthy gift basket and choice of a threemonth BFC membership, three one-hour personal training sessions, or three one-hour massages. The cost is $399 for BFC members and $499 for nonmembers, which includes BFC membership for the program’s duration. Upgrade to 60-minute personal training sessions for $99. One-on-one nutrition consultations are available for an additional $95 each or two participants can do a group session for $50 each. Programs for children offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer two children’s programs in February. Both programs begin at 11 a.m. and will be held at the Anne Zusy Youth Center at Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Admission for these shows is $5 for children age two and up. This program is suitable for children age five and up. With castles, kings, and a sorceress, “Dragons and Dreams” is a daring journey to save a kingdom. Bauer to appear at ‘Realistic Resolutions 2013’ The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce along with Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management, The Valley Hospital, Van Dyk Health Care, Home Helpers, Bolger Fitness Center, Ridgewood YMCA, and the YWCA of Bergen County, will present Realistic Resolutions 2013 on Thursday, Jan. 17. The program will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ridgewood YMCA/YWCA of Bergen County located at 112 Oak Street. Service providers and local businesses will offer free blood pressure, body fat analysis, chair massage, depression screening, information, and much more. At 7 p.m., join celebrity guest and keynote speaker, Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN, one of the nation’s leading health authorities, and the nutrition and health expert for the “TODAY Show.” Prior to the presentation, Bauer will sign copies of her books from 6 to 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Choral hosts Anniversary Benefit Concert The Ridgewood Choral will present its 85th Anniversary Benefit Concert on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. The concert will be held at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, located at 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. Since 1967, this women’s chorus has presented the Florence Reinauer Memorial Music Award to a musically talented teen. Scholarships totaling over $24,000 have been awarded to high school seniors in recognition of excellence in vocal or instrumental performance. In celebration of its 85th Season of Song and Service, the benefit concert will feature performances by past Music Award winners, including: Carl Bolleia, piano, 2004; Jessica Eucker, soprano, 2008; Robert Farruggia, tenor, 2006; Kristen McGuire, flute, 2007; and Emma Schmiedecke, cello, 2008. Wine, dessert, and coffee, all provided by local vendors, are available before the shows and during intermission. Programs begin at 8 p.m. On Jan. 19, Arlon Bennett will perform with full band. Joining him will be John Sonntag on guitar, Gordon Roehrer on bass, Arthur Miller on percussion, and Ansel Matthews and Maureen Fichter on harmony vocals. Special guests The Levins will open the show. Bennett is a storyteller who delivers timeless vignettes and melodies in his own style that recalls Harry Chapin and vintage James Taylor. Bennett was twice selected by Noel “Paul” Stookey to perform in his Music2Life showcase at the Kerrville Folk Festival, featuring America’s best songs of social consciousness. His song, “Be the Change,” from Summer’s Voice has garnered top national airplay on folk radio, and the New York Mets chose that CD’s title track to be featured in a tribute video to Hall of Fame sportscaster
