Learn about classical Rome Fourth and fifth grade students are invited to register for Ridgewood Parks and Recreation’s “Introducing the Classical World!” This class will be held on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. from March 6 through April 17. The cost is $50 for six sessions. Ridgewood Girl Scout Britta Potter will run this program as a part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. Potter, a Ridgewood High School junior, is active in the school’s Latin program and has found the study of Latin and Rome not only fascinating and worthy of study in its own right, but also helpful for navigating the modern world. She plans to bring the classical world to life for elementary school children, and introduce them to the wonders of Rome. Using games, hands-on activities, and simulations, the program will feature three action-packed lessons on Latin language, Roman culture, and Greco-Roman mythology. Students will learn how the classical world shaped and influenced the modern world. Highlights of the program include a mock archaeological dig, a senatorial debate about jelly, a snapshot of mythology and Latin roots through Pokémon, and a final banquet party in the Roman style on April 17. Examining ancient Roman culture reveals many modern
parallels, while the language is priceless for modern English vocabulary, grammar, and general literacy. Studying Roman history reinforces themes from modern history courses in school and proves that history does, in fact, repeat itself. Online registration is available at Community Pass, www.ridgewoodnj.net/communitypass or register inperson or by mail to The Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
