Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • February 27, 2013 Area The Sunset Rotary Club of Glen Rock, Paramus, and Ridgewood recently hosted guest speaker Ellen Elias, vice president of The Center for Alcohol & Drug Resources. Based at 241 Main Street, Suite 600 in Hackensack, the center is a program of Children’s Aid and Family Services that works toward substance abuse prevention, and Elias addresses Sunset Rotary Club members provides education, information, and referral services to county residents, businesses, schools, faith-based organizations, municipal alliances, and social service agencies. The center is supported by grants, contracts, and generous contributions from public and private donors. As a result, many services are offered to the public at no cost. The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources is the Prevention Resource Center for Bergen County and towns east of the Passaic River in Passaic County. Elias explained that, while alcohol is the most common drug for which people are admitted to treatment programs, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs are the fastest growing problems. According to the statistics Elias provided, someone dies from an overdose every 19 minutes; 25 percent of the world’s prescription drugs are consumed in the U.S.; 25 percent of children live with a parent who uses illicit drugs; 80 percent of drug users work full time; alcohol abuse in children starts as early as age 11; 95 percent of the time, 15- to 20-year-olds consume five or more drinks at one sitting. Sunset Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Bonefish Grill in Paramus Park. The club raises funds and provides human resources for many worthy causes.
