The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria at 400 Hamilton Avenue. Tickets may be purchased for $6 at the door. Fashions will be modeled by GRHS students. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Burlington, Vermont, which provides free overnight lodging and support for cancer patients who must travel far from home for cancer treatment. Fashions are being provided by Suite 201, Gattinolli, Biltmore Tuxedos, and others. Hair and makeup services are being donated by Moxie Salon thanks to Glen Rock alumna Kelly O’Neill. The event will also support the high school’s sister school in Paterson by collecting prom dresses for students there. Admission to the show is free to those who donate a dress. Donations of dresses are welcome from anyone. Appropriate dresses, long or short, may also be dropped off at the high school attendance office during school hours. Last year’s event netted over $1,000 in donations. For more information, or to make a monetary donation to the cause, contact Interact Club advisor Debbie Brolsma at brolsmad@glenrocknj.org. The library is located at 315 Rock Road. For details, call (201) 670-3970. Kindergarten registration begins The Glen Rock School District will hold its kindergarten registration for September 2013 at the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road, on March 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on March 6 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The school district encourages families to take this opportunity to secure library cards for their children. Official registration packets, including residency and age requirements, health forms, and additional information, should be downloaded from www.glenrocknj.org using the Parents/Students tab to reach the Registration Information link. Additional information is available by contacting any of the elementary schools at (201) 445-7700. For the convenience of all families, no appointments are necessary. All registrations will be treated equally, with no “first come, first served” preference given. A child’s school placement is determined through a process that seeks to balance enrollment figures among the four elementary schools, taking into consideration the presence of siblings. Families will be notified of their child’s assignment by June 1. Kindergarten registration is open to all resident children who will turn five years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2013. School administrators and nursing personnel will be on hand to answer questions. Parents are asked to complete all forms prior to registration and to bring appropriate original proofs of residency and birth date to expedite the process. Two proofs of residency must be presented, including either a deed or rental agreement, along with a driver’s license, utility bill, or tax bill. Proof of the child’s identity and age may include an original birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or passport. Kindergarten orientation meetings will be scheduled before the opening of school. Updated information will be posted on the district website. Interested families will also be able to register for the Glen Rock Community School’s Kindergarten Plus enrichment program at the same time. Registration for all children entering the district in September 2013 will be held May 20 at the Glen Rock Public Library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Arboretum seeks volunteers for spring cleanup The Thielke Arboretum, located at 460 Doremus Avenue, in Glen Rock, will hold a Volunteer Day on Saturday, March 9. Volunteers will be needed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Rain date: March 16). Adults, teenagers, and children ages five and up are invited to help with a variety of tasks to prepare the arboretum for spring. Tasks planned for the day include raking the gravel along marked paths to prevent further erosion and cutting down dried grasses and pond reeds to make room for new growth. Children may also play an active role by weaving waddles, an ancient construction of living materials placed in strategic locations to take root and prevent soil loss. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather and are welcome to bring garden gloves, pruners, rakes, wheelbarrows, and weed wackers. For further information on programs, or how to become a member, visit www.glenrockarboretum.org, or call (201) 447-0452.
