February 13, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 17 Ridgewood Notes Filing deadline for school board candidates nears The Ridgewood Board of Education will have two vacancies in the Tuesday, April 16, 2013 annual school board election. A full term on the school board runs for three years. Candidates must file a nominating petition with the local school board in order to have their name on the ballot. The current deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4 p.m. Verizon cell phone time on Feb. 25, 2013. Prospective school board candidates can obtain a School Board Candidate Kit at the Education Center located at 49 Cottage Place or online a www.njsba.org/candidacy. The kit includes a sample nominating petition, information about the legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included. ‘Lenten Interlude’ offered The Women’s Guild of Old Paramus Reformed Church in Ridgewood will host “A Lenten Interlude” and a catered luncheon on Wednesday, March 6. Lunch will be served at noon. The program will follow at 1:15 p.m. Pianist and ecumenical Bible study leader Ruth Amiaga will present the program of Christ’s passion and resurrection in song and stories; Pat Yatsko will lead the devotions. Learn to cook The Ridgewood Culinary Studio will hold a Winter Break Cooking Camp for children from Feb. 18 through 22. Preschool sports programs announced Ridgewood Recreation Division and U.S. Sports Institute will provide preschool instruction in Sport Squirts and T-Ball programs this spring. Both programs are open to children ages three through five. The cost for each six-week program is $125 per child. All equipment is provided. Sport Squirt classes introduce children to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. All games and activities promote hand/eye coordination, balance, agility, and movement. In addition to learning basketball, T-ball, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, participants develop social interaction and communication skills. One-hour sessions will be offered on Tuesdays beginning April 16 at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:45 p.m. T-Ball classes teach the core components of the game through a series of games and activities. Preschoolers invited to programs The recreation division will offer several early spring classes for the village’s youngest residents. All classes are held at The Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. My First Art with Abrakadoodle, for children ages 20 to 42 months, will be offered on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning March 5. Caregivers join little ones as they paint, draw, and sculpt while building fine motor skills, language, and cognitive skills. The fee is $110 for the sixweek session and includes non-toxic Crayola materials. Happy Feet, for children ages three through five, will be held Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. beginning March 6. Students will learn basic ballet positions and thematic movement exploration. Formal dance attire is not required; students should dress comfortably. The fee is $60 for the five-week session. Children ages three through five may participate in Mini Doodler with Abrakadoodle on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. beginning March 6. Participants in this mixed media class will include work with paints, prints, sculpture, collage, and more. The fee is $110 for the six-week session and includes all materials. Happy Piano, for children ages three through five, will meet on Thursdays beginning March 7. Students will learn the basics of music theory and how to play familiar songs. Educational songs, props, and teaching aids will be used. Classes are offered in half-hour sessions at 1:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. The fee is $120 for the six-week session. Material kits are required for all new students and will be available for purchase on the first day of class. The additional $35 fee for these kits is payable to Happy Piano. Chinese for Children is offered to students three and four years of age on Mondays beginning March 25. This immersion environment is filled with exciting, ageappropriate action games, visual aids, vocabulary-building songs, play, and laughs. The class meets from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and costs $149 for the six-week session. A materials cost of $29.95 is required every other session. February Vacation Day program slated From Feb. 18 through 22, the YWCA of Bergen County will present a Vacation Day program for children in kindergarten through grade six. Activities will include Creatively Yours, Giggles, FunPlex, movies, and bowling. This program provides full day care from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on designated school holidays. Based at the YWCA’s 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood, the program is supervised by the YWCA’s trained child care staff. The fee is $55 per child per day for families currently participating in YWCA Before or After School programs, and $75 for non-participating families. Advance registration is required.
