Advisory board volunteers sought The Ridgewood Community Center is seeking volunteers for its advisory board. The board establishes policies and procedures, plans programs, and meets with local officials. The newly renovated center is available to community groups for classes and programs. Volunteers are welcome to assist with the daily setup of the programs and meet with visitors on weekday mornings. To obtain an application to volunteer, visit the Parks and Recreation Department at The Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. For more information, call (201) 670-5560. YMCA presents varied classes Registration for the eight-week winter/spring session at the Ridgewood YMCA will open on Feb. 11. Classes will begin Feb. 25 and continue through April 21. Registration is available in person at the Y, by phone at (201) 444-5600, or online for current members at www.ridgewoodymca. org. Active membership is required to register. New programs include “Guitar Level I” for children ages seven through 10; “You and Me Baby,” a mother/child bonding program for children ages six months to16 months; and “Once upon a Lunchtime,” a late morning story-time program for children ages three through five. YMCA to host School Vacation Camp The Ridgewood YMCA will host a School Vacation Camp for children four through 12. Camp will be held from Feb. 18 through 22 at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours available. The cost for camp is $75 per day for Ridgewood YMCA members, $85 per day for non-members, and $60 per day for any 2012 returning summer campers. Children will enjoy daily recreational and educational activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, a field trip, and theme days. Horvath exhibits oil paintings During the month of February, the Stable Art Gallery is hosting “Oil Paintings by Ed Horvath,” an exhibit that features approximately 32 of the artist’s pieces. The gallery is located at 259 North Maple Avenue. Horvath attended the School of Visual Arts in New York to pursue a career in the art of illustration. After leaving school, he worked as an art director/illustrator before deciding to return to oil painting. The artist, who has studied with John Osborne, received the American Post Card Award at the 30th Regional Juried Show at the Ridgewood Art Institute. He has also received a third place medal in oil painting at the 12th Annual Saint Catherine Patron of the Arts Show. He is a member of the Ridgewood Art Institute Board of Directors.
Ridgewood Patrolman Jeffrey Casson was conducting routine security checks for the Ridgewood Municipal Court when he discovered drug paraphernalia in a Fair Lawn woman’s handbag. The 29-year-old woman attending the court session on Jan. 24 was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and now faces her own court appearance. Also on Jan. 24, the owner of West Side Bagels reported a burglary against the business after he reported finding that money and a laptop had been taken. On Jan. 26, police captured a 19-year-old Ridgewood man who attempted to flee on foot after he spotted a police car on Godwin Avenue. Learn about depression in women Dr. Michelle Preminger, psychiatrist, ob-gyn, and founder of the Women’s Emotional Wellness Center in Waldwick, will discuss depression in women at the Feb. 6 meeting of the OLMC MOMs. The meeting will be held at 9:15 a.m. at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Parish Center located at 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood. OLMC MOMs will host its Ash Wednesday Prayer Service and Meatless Dinner on Feb. 13. The prayer service for receiving ashes will be held at 5:30 p.m. A simple meal in the Parish Center will follow. The cost to attend the dinner is $5 per person ($20 maximum per family), and includes the meatless dinner, drinks, crafts, and activities. Checks should be made payable to OLMC MOMs. Hauck offers ‘Let’s Get Acquainted’ Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck invites Ridgewood residents to share a light lunch and engage in an activity each month. As a newly-elected government official and liaison to the Ridgewood Community Center, Hauck will take this opportunity to get to know residents of the village. “Let’s Get Acquainted” programs will be held the first Thursday of each month, including Feb. 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, and June 6 in the Patrick M. Policeman discovers drug paraphernalia in courtroom
after a foot chase. He was charged with criminal mischief and obstruction of the administration of justice. He was remanded to Bergen County Jail after he was unable to post bail. On Jan. 27, police intervened in a fight on Claremont Road and a 25-year-old Somerville man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing the administration of justice. On Jan. 28, a Parsons Road resident reported that her vehicle had been entered over the weekend and items had been taken. The same day, a Glenview Avenue resident reported that her unlocked garage had been opened over the weekend and money was taken from her vehicles.
