Ridgewood Choral performs Spring Concert On April 26, the Ridgewood Choral will perform its Annual Spring Concert at West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. The 8 p.m. concert is part of the group’s 85th Anniversary of Women in Song and Service. Founded in 1928 by a group of women who shared a mutual love of song and a passion for community service, the Ridgewood Choral, one of the area’s foremost women’s choruses, has been enriching the musical culture of Bergen County for the past 85 years. Founded and directed by Frank Kasschau, a nationally renowned choral director, the Ridgewood Choral quickly distinguished itself as an accomplished vocal group within a wide range of vocal literature including classical, baroque, sacred, Broadway, and pop. Morning retreat offered Potter Ray Boswell will lead a morning retreat on “Encountering God” through the medium of pottery on Saturday, April 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. The program will be held at Christ Episcopal Church located at 105 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. There is no cost to attend, but a freewill offering basket will be available for donations. Those who attend will have an opportunity to make a votive dove. The fee to make the dove is $8. This program is open to the community. To register, call (201) 652-2350. Graydon Pool memberships for sale Memberships for Graydon Pool’s 13-week 2013 summer season are now on sale. The pool features a shaded playground, water play fountains, shade kites, Adirondack chairs, a picnic area, sheltered pavilion, charcoal grills, and The Water’s Edge Café. Additional amenities include a lending library, volleyball, basketball, ping-pong tables, shuffleboard, four-squares, and hopscotch. Special programs include “Storytime under a Tree” for the little ones, swim instruction for children and adults, and an adaptive swim class. The Graydon Swim Team welcomes youth members, ages eight to 14. The cost for residents is $110 for adults and $100 for children ages two through 15. The fees for non-residents are $175 for adults and $155 for children ages two through 15. The pool will open Saturday, June 1. In-person registration assistance will be available Saturdays, May 11 and 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Graydon Pool Badge Office, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Parlance Chamber Concert to feature virtuosos On April 28 at 4 p.m., three fast-rising virtuosos will be featured in the season’s final Parlance Chamber Concert. Clarinetist Anthony McGill, cellist Nicholas Canellakas, and pianist Inon Barnatan will perform favorite solos, duos, and trios by Beethoven and Brahms. The concert will be held at the West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. McGill is the principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera. He performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Gabriela Montero at the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama. Canellakis is currently an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, having been a member of the society’s coveted CMS Two program from 2009 to 2012. Barnatan recently completed three seasons as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program. In 2009, he curated a festival of Schubert’s late solo piano, songs, and chamber music works for the society, becoming the first musician other than the society’s artistic directors to be invited to program concerts. This program will include “Beethoven Trio in B-flat, Op. 11,” “Beethoven Cello Sonata No. 3 in A, Op. 69, “ “Brahms Two Piano Rhapsodies, Op. 79,” and “Brahms Trio in A minor, Op. 114.”
Chamber Concert Artistic Director Michael Parloff will guide the audience through the afternoon with informative and often humorous commentary about the music. Gallery to feature DeBernardis watercolors Dee DeBernardis will exhibit her watercolors at the Stable Gallery show “Latitudes and Longitudes” during the month of May. The paintings exhibit DeBernardis’ love of sailing around Shelter Island, New York in a doughdish, a sailboat dating back to the 1930s. Her paintings also feature scenes from Cape Cod and Rhode Island. DeBernardis began her studies with artists Cornelia Ford and Malcolm Thompson in Connecticut. While studying at the Philadelphia College of Art, her work was chosen for the cover of the college’s publication. She has also studied at the Art Students League in New York City under Nicki Orbach and Frederick Brosen. The artist has exhibited in many juried shows, and her work is part of several private collections. Her painting of the memorials on the Crest Road wall after Sept. 11, 2001, entitled “The View Forever Changed,” is on permanent display in the Ridgewood Library. An Artist’s Reception will be held May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Stable Gallery is located at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Girls invited to learn golf The YWCA Bergen County’s new Golf Basics for girls ages 13 through 18 is ideal for young women who are considering sports scholarships as a way to help pay for college. Certified teaching professional Christine Cipriano will teach the basic skills, techniques, and mechanics to make winning shots within 100 yards of the green. Cipriano is the founder of “Fit for the Tee” and is dedicated to empowering women and girls to achieve health and business success through the game of golf. This six-week indoor program will begin April 29. Classes will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA’s facility at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. The fee is $90 and includes all equipment. Hauck offers ‘Let’s Get Acquainted’ Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck invites Ridgewood residents to share a light lunch and engage in an activity each month. As a newly-elected government official and liaison to the Ridgewood Community Center, Hauck will take this opportunity to get to know residents of the village. “Let’s Get Acquainted” programs are held the first Thursday of each month, including May 2 and June 6, in the Patrick M. Mancuso Senior Lounge of the Community Center at 131 North Maple Avenue. The programs begin as
noon. Activities include brain teasers, pet therapy, memoirs and shared memories, and expert technology advice. Ali Stroker to perform benefit Actress and Ridgewood native Ali Stroker, who was part of “The Glee Project” and appeared on “Glee,” will perform a family-friendly benefit concert for Ridgewood Friends’ Neighborhood Nursery School. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. on April 28 at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, located at 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. The suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Y host Healthy Kids Day On Saturday, April 27, the Ridgewood YMCA will celebrate YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event that encourages kids to get moving and learning and families to live healthier. Healthy Kids Day, which will be held at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature active play and educational activities, such as youth sport games, Family Zumba, healthy living and nutrition demonstrations, a magic show, karate, and more. Representatives from the Junior League of Bergen County will present a “Kids in the Kitchen” workshop featuring healthy cooking demonstrations, crafts, and family-focused healthy living activities.
