April 17. 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Ridgewood The Ridgewood Village Council has introduced an ordinance that would ban smoking in Ridgewood’s designated parks. The measure will be considered for final adoption at the May 8 public meeting. If adopted, the ordinance would create smoke-free zones at all public parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and other recreational areas owned or leased by the Village of Ridgewood. Under the ban, the area between Ridgewood Village Hall and the Ridgewood Public Library would be smoke-free, as would all property, structures, and other areas owned or leased by the village. The ban would not apply to the seating areas on the north side of Memorial Park at Van Neste Square at the sidewalk level, parking lots, and public streets. This language was incorporated in the April 10 public meeting agenda but was not incorporated in the original draft of the ordinance. Questioned by Councilman Thomas Riche, Ridgewood Village Attorney Matt Rogers said there was still adequate Village introduces ordinance to prohibit smoking in parks legal time to specifically exempt benches and parking lots from the ban on the use of tobacco products so that the ordinance would be changed when it is adopted. Riche then voted with the majority, and the ordinance was formally introduced 4-0. Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh absent from the April 10 public meeting. The ordinance provides for a warning by the court of a fine of not less than $50, but not more than $100, for conviction of a first offense. The ordinance provides for a $100 to $150 fine for conviction of a second offense, and a fine of $150 to $500 for conviction of a third or any subsequent offenses. The residents who spoke at a previous meeting strongly favored the smoking ban, which is similar to bans that already exist in a number of neighboring towns and towns around the state. J.
