Safety awareness program available The Kidsafe Defense, Karate, and Safety Awareness class, sponsored by Ridgewood Parks and Recreation, will begin April 23. The eight-week class, open to boys and girls ages five through 15, promotes selfesteem, self-discipline, defense, and safety awareness, rather than aggression. Classes are held on Tuesdays after school, from April 23 through June 11 at Hawes School. New students will meet from 4:30 to 5:10 p.m.; returning students and new students will meet from 5:20 to 6 p.m.; and all those with colored belts will meet from 6:10 to 6:50 p.m. The cost is $ 74 for the eight week semester. Uniforms are recommended and are available throughout the session for an additional cost of $30. Registration will be held April 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hawes School on Stevens Avenue in Ridgewood. For details, contact Kidsafe at (973) 284-5650. Register for fall soccer Registration is under way for the Ridgewood Soccer Association’s 2013 fall season. The RSA has programs for children and teens (preschool through grade 12) at all skill levels. Register before May 15 to avoid late fees. Players in grades one through four may register for in-town teams. Those in grades five through eight may register for travel teams. Both groups practice one time during the week and play one game over the weekend. Players in grades nine through 12 are
eligible to play on a co-ed Division 2 team. High school participants scrimmage once during the week and play a game on Sunday afternoons. The RSA also offers special needs sessions on Saturday afternoons. Designed for youngsters ages six through 14, this program develops skills and promotes physical fitness. All players are paired with a coachmentor from the Ridgewood High School Girls Soccer team and receive individualized attention in a small group setting. Volunteer coaches are needed. No experience is necessary. Players who register after May 15 will be assigned to a team on a space available basis and will be charged a $50 late fee. Fall KinderKickers is open to children age four and five in preschool and kindergarten. Sessions are held on Saturdays in a convenient Ridgewood location. Registration will begin June 1. Summer Day Camp available Children are welcome to register for Ridgewood’s Summer Day Camp. This program will open July 2 and run through Aug. 9. Children who will be entering grades one through six will enjoy arts and crafts, organized games, swimming, special events, and optional trips. Camp will be held at The Stable, Graydon Pool, Maple Park, Veteran’s Field, the Community Center at Ridgewood Village Hall, and Leuning Park, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants should bring a bag lunch and beverage. Bus transportation from village locations is available to all.
The registration fee is $525 for Ridgewood children and $700 for non-resident children. The fee includes two camp T-shirts and optional bus transportation. CPR-AED training class set The Health Ministry of Old Paramus Reformed Church will sponsor classes for instruction in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator use. The classes will meet April 2 and 15. The each class is limited to 12 persons. The cost for the class is covered by the health ministry, but a $6 card fee indicating the completion of the course is payable to the instructor. Walking tour features Victorian homes Join the Ridgewood Historical Society at 2 p.m. on May 19 for a 90-minute walking tour of eight Victorian homes. The tour will begin and end at Ridgewood High School, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. The tour will be guided by Elliott Dee, a member of the Ridgewood Historical Society who has studied architecture at Cornell and Harvard. Dee led the fall 2012 Historic Homes Walking Tour. The tour will cover Brookside Avenue, Spring Avenue, and South Irving Street. Tickets may be obtained from the Ridgewood Schoolhouse Museum by calling (201) 447-3242. Spring classes available at YWCA Registration for the next session of YWCA Bergen County programs will begin Monday, April 8 at 8:30 a.m. Members may register at www.ywcabergencounty.org, by phone, or in person.
