Wyckoff May 29, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Police officer injured; resident jailed for assault by John Koster A 35-year-old Wyckoff man was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail after he struck Wyckoff Police Sergeant Dale Winters in the knee and sent him to The Valley Hospital. The resident was reportedly having a verbal altercation with his 67-yearold mother when Sergeant Winters and Patrolman Kevin Kasak responded to the Wyckoff Avenue home. Police described the man as highly intoxicated and acting aggressively and called for back-up. Wyckoff Police Sergeant Brian Zivkovich, Patrol Officer Brenda Groslinger, and two Midland Park officers arrived. In a fight to restrain the 35-year-old man, Sergeant Winters was struck in the knee. The officer was transported to Valley Hospital by ambulance for treatment and released later that night, but has been relieved from work indefinitely pending the results of medical testing. The assailant was arrested and charged with third degree aggravated assault on a police officer, and criminal mischief in damaging a police patrol vehicle. He was committed to Bergen County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail, and the complaints against him have been referred to Bergen County Superior Court. Young anglers, ages 14 and younger, are invited to Zabriskie Pond Park on Saturday, June 1 for the 31st Annual Fishing Derby sponsored by the Wyckoff Environmental Commission. The event will be held rain or shine at the park, which is located between Franklin and Clinton avenues in Wyckoff. This is a catch and release event. In an effort to cause the least distress to the fish, anglers are encouraged to use barbless hooks. A barbless hook is one that does not have downward points (barbs) on the “J” shape of the hook. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. and Fishing Derby set for June 1 the derby will be held between 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories around 10:30 a.m. Members of the environmental commission will be on hand to measure each catch. This annual event draws nearly 200 anglers and their parents or grandparents for a morning of fun and fishing.
