Butts will present “From Shakespeare to Sunset Boulevard: The Story of the Broadway Musical” on Thursday, May 30. This free event will be held at the Wyckoff Public Library at 7:30 p.m. The Broadway show emerged from plays with songs to full-blown musicals at the beginning of the 20th century with a vitality drawn from the spirit and talents of lyricists, composers, and performers. Its Golden Age arrived via the creative personalities of Rodgers, Hammerstein, Lerner, Loewe, Kern, Porter, Gershwin, Bernstein, Webber, and Sondheim. Maestro Butts, is the conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and a music faculty member at Montclair State University. Register in person at the library’s reference desk or by phone at (201) 891-4866. The library is located at 200 Woodland Avenue. This program is funded by the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Donations sought for Strong Kids campaign The Wyckoff Family Y is halfway to its Strong Kids Campaign fundraising goal of $150,000, and is seeking community support to reach the final goal by mid-June. A contribution to the Wyckoff Y’s Strong Kids Campaign provides meaningful, lasting impact for an individual or family right here in the community. Last year Strong Kids Campaign dollars provided financial assistance for children and families in need. This includes child care, after school care, and summer camp. The program helped sponsor over 150 kids from Paterson to attend Camp Wydaca free of charge; subsidized costs for over 100 children and young adults in Y Special Needs Programs to include individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities; offered critical therapeutic exercise programs for those who cannot afford them (including those recovering from cancer, heart disease, and other debilitating conditions); created affordable programs and vital social services for active older adult members; offered educational programs at no charge to the community, including “The Parent Connection” and health and wellness discussions; created a new initiative to provide a network for military veterans that offers a variety of supportive services; and hosted many community events to raise funds and awareness for cause-driven issues, as in the Buddy Walk, Wyckoff Day, and Pietro Maugeri Walk. The Wyckoff Family YMCA is a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization. No one who is experiencing financial hardship is ever turned away for inability to pay.
