MacKay accepts dual role in regional district
by Frank J. McMahon Beverly MacKay, the director of curriculum and instruction in the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District, has agreed to also act as the district’s interim superintendent from May 16 to the end of August, when the board expects to appoint a long-term interim superintendent. Lynn Budd, the school board president, announced MacKay’s dual role at last week’s board of education meeting “The board very much appreciates Bev’s willingness to serve in this capacity and is in the process of finalizing her contract,” Budd said. She also announced that the board had completed the interview process for the long-term interim superintendent position and has selected a candidate. Revealing that the candidate is male, she advised that the board is in the process of finalizing his contract and placing it before the executive county superintendent. Following the meeting, Budd advised that the candidate is experienced, so the search for a permanent superintendent will be not be undertaken until a later date. “I feel honored to serve a community that is so dedicated and committed to the education of our children,” MacKay said after the announcement. “Our teachers, administrators, and support staff really believe in providing the best education and show their dedication to students every day. I am committed to working with the entire educational community, including students, teachers, parents, and administrators to maintain the level of excellence expected in our two high schools. May and June are really busy months at both Ramapo and Indian Hills, but the challenge should be fun!”

Prior to that, she was the athletic director and team leader at that school. In her role as team leader, she organized and facilitated team meetings for 13 special area teachers and motivated and supported teachers through collaboration and sharing of teaching strategies, and the encouragement of integration of subject areas. She was also a middle school health educator for students in grades six through eight. In that position, she developed a new K-8 district health curriculum guide, aligned the curriculum to the New Jersey Core Content Standards. She also chaired the K-8 AIDS Curriculum Revision Committee and served on Wyckoff Curriculum Council addressing report card revision and new teacher instruction program development. Her professional background also includes employment as the project director for the New Jersey Technology Literacy Challenge Fund Grant, during which time she implemented all facets of a $95,000 discretionary grant, including training, schedules, budgeting, supervising new curriculum initiatives, purchasing of equipment, chairing an oversight committee, and performance reporting to the New Jersey Department of Education. MacKay received a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Rutgers University in 2000. She received a master’s in education, adult education, and professional education from the same university in 1983. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in North Carolina in 1982.
