Evarista Boland, nee Monahan, of Wyckoff, formerly of Cranbury and Weehawken, died May 4. She was 92. After raising her family, she resumed a successful career as a textile business manager in New York City. She is survived by her children Catherine Boyle, John C. and James F., seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Jim. Cecelia M. Dugan of Wyckoff died May 2. She was 89. Before retiring, she was an executive secretary for over 40 years at Lanvin – Charles of the Ritz, in New York. She was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth’s Church in Wyckoff and co-president of its senior citizens’ club. She was a member of the Wyckoff Senior Club. She is survived by her son Patrick Dugan, her sister Eileen Slevin, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary Corkery, Margaret Macaulay, Catherine Zoller, and her brothers Cornelius and James. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. She was 69. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Midland Park CERT. She is survived by her children Star Stokes, Ondrea Bell Triggiani Ellatakunee, and Tanya Rose Cicerale, and nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Charles W. She is survived by her husband Charles and her children Patrice Todd, Lisa Barrows, Kathy Gregory, and Peter Violante, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Nicholas VanderWall of Wyckoff died May 7. He was 95. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before retiring, he was a self-employed painter with VanderWall Brothers of Wyckoff. He was a member of Abundant Life Reformed Church in Wyckoff. He is survived by his wife Clara (nee Van Meekren) VanderWall, his sons Nicholas VanderWall Jr. and James VanderWall, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Martin and Melvin. She graduated from Eastern Academy and from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, with a degree in journalism. She was a competitive speed skater. In 1943, she skated in Madison Square Garden and won the Girls Intermediate Derby Silver Skates. While at Hood College, she participated in many activities and sports. In 1949, she was elected the Hood College White Blazer Girl, the honor given to the most outstanding overall student in the graduating class. As a White Blazer Girl, she was a charter member of the Hood College Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. She had served as a youth group leader, band parent, Girl Scout leader, basketball cheerleader, advisor, confidante, and teacher. After she raised her children, she attended William Paterson University to obtain her teaching certification in English and English as a Second Language. While at William Paterson, she was inducted into the Beta Chi Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta, an honor and professional society in the field of education. After receiving her certification, she taught at both Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools, retiring in 1995. She served on the board of directors for the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat in Wyckoff and was a member of the retreat’s auxiliary, where she worked each year for both its Country Fair and Fashion Show. She was a member of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and worked in Kurth Cottage for years. She was a member and served as president of the Holland Christian Home Auxiliary. She was a member of the Wyckoff Reformed Church. She played in the Joyful Noise Bell Choir, was active on the Outreach Committee, and played the carillon on Sunday mornings. After joining the Wyckoff Reformed Church, she remained a member of the Priscilla Circle of Second Reformed Church, now Abundant Life. She is survived by her husband Dick Van Hassel, her children Leann Mehrer of Dickinson, North Dakota, Abram Van Hassel of Westtown, New York, Richard Van Hassel of Centennial, Colorado, and Barbara Van Hassel of Wanaque, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers William Kamp of Wayne and Barney Kamp of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was predeceased by her parents Barney and Sietzke Kamp, her sisters Gertrude Foster and Sally Fyffe, and her brothers John, Sidney, Conrad, Daniel, and Arthur Kamp. Class of 2014 sells umbrellas The Ramapo High School Class of 2014 is selling umbrellas to raise funds for Project Graduation. Sixty-inch golf umbrellas are available for $21 and a 36-inch telescopic automatic folding umbrella is available for $16. Both umbrellas are green with the white Ramapo logo. Fashion Design Contest winners announced The Ramapo Indian Hills Family and Consumer Science Department has announced the winners of the New Jersey Daughters of the American Revolution 2013 Fashion Design Contest. Under the direction of fashion class instructors Robin Crossley at Ramapo High School and Debra Martin from Indian Hills High School, the district swept up 22 of the 35 awards presented in the state. Eight winners were named from Ramapo High School: Alessia DiGennaro won first place in Junior Dress category, and Hannah Scibetta took third place. In the Senior Dress category, Claudia Macciarelli won first place and Gina Salmins won third place. Katie Paulson received the third place award in Junior Jackets, Eline van Doorne took second in Junior Separates, and Brenna Stark earned a second place award in Junior Summer Sundresses. Evi Manoussaki took the third place prize for her Senior Party/Prom entry. Fourteen contestants from Indian Hills High School earned honors. Jordan Roe won second place for Junior Dresses. Caitlyn Allen took second place in the Senior Dress category. Lauren Payton won first place for Junior Jackets and Taylor Psirogianies took second place in that category. Francine Vaccari won first place for Senior Jackets, and Candance Funsch took second place. In the Junior Party/Prom category, Amanda Scerbo took second place and Amanda Lamer won third place. Erica Marino won second place for her Senior Party Prom entry. Arianna Shaghaghi garnered a first place award for Junior Separates and Alyssa Farraye earned second place for Senior Separates. Nicole DeSantis placed third in Junior Summer Sundresses. In the Senior Summer Sundresses category, Victoria Capizzi won second place and Kristen Zaccardi took third. Barofsky to speak Ramapo High School’s Public Policy Group and North Jersey Public Policy Network will host guest speaker Neil Barofsky on May 16. This 7:30 p.m. program will be held at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes. Barofsky is an adjunct professor of law and senior research fellow at New York University School of Law and a former Special U.S. Treasury Department Inspector General who oversaw the TARP/Wall Street Bailout. He will speak about Wall Street before and after the bailout, how it was managed, and what it means for the country and financial reform. The program will be moderated by Cathy O’Neil, a former Wall Street executive, blogger, and TV guest. This program is free and open to the public. Community invited to Relay for Life The American Cancer Society invites the FLOW community to participate in its Relay for Life event set for May 17 and 18 at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes. The overnight event celebrates those who have battled cancer, remembering loved ones lost, and provides an opportunity to fight back against the disease. Relay for Life supports the society’s mission to save lives by helping people get well and stay well, finding cures, and fighting back. The program will begin at 5 p.m. on May 17. The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. The event will continue through the night, ending at 6 a.m. on May 18. Relay teams will camp out and take turns walking or running around a track. Relay events are up to 24 hours in length and, because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.
