May 15, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 11 Wyckoff expresses property maintenance concerns by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee, staff members, and residents aired their concerns regarding the landlord’s maintenance of the government-rented Wyckoff Post Office building. “We’ve issued abatement notices to the post office and the property owner,” Wyckoff Township Attorney Robert Landel said. “The next step would be to issue summonses for maintenance.” Wyckoff Township Administrator Robert Shannon added, “If this were a private building we would have been all over them.” The problem, local officials said, is that the post office is a federal agency and the property owner who rents to site to the federal government -- not named -- has not been responsive to complaints. “That parking lot is a death trap,” Township Committeeman Kevin Rooney said. “People are backing into each other.” Several committee members also indicated that the paving in the lot and around the building needed a lot of work. They said the owner had been “recalcitrant.” Township Committeeman Brian Scanlan pointed out one possible avenue of legal attack: the roof leaks. “I’ve noticed that the roof is leaking,” Scanlan said. “It’s not purely aesthetic -- it’s ridiculous. Why it can’t be repaired is beyond me.” Sue Winton, a resident who frequently speaks at township committee meetings, urged that the U.S. postal workers not be subjected to verbal abuse because the property owner neglects the rented building. “It’s kind of embarrassing to stand there and listen to the abuse these people have to take,” Winton said. “People shouldn’t be nasty, but look at other landlords,” Rooney replied. He said most commercial property owners or their tenants took responsible care of their premises and that the post office building and its parking lot really needed an overhaul.
