Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • May 8, 2013 Villadom Happenings Community Hymn Festival of Choirs set On Sunday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m., choirs from multiple Bergen County churches of all denominations will participate in the 24th Annual Community Hymn Festival of Choirs at Ridgewood’s West Side Presbyterian Church. This ecumenical event is open to the public. Freewill offerings will be accepted; $10 is suggested. Presented by The American Guild of Organists’ Northern New Jersey Chapter, the annual festival and a fall campaign benefit the John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund for Church Music. The Rodland Scholarships are the largest such awards to church music majors in the nation. Since its inception in 1990, $206,450 has been awarded in scholarships to future church musicians. This year’s winner of a $9,000 first prize is Abigail Rockwood, a doctor of musical arts candidate at the Eastman School of Music studying with David Higgs. She was a student of Dr. Huw Lewis at Hope College, where she received her bachelor of music. She earned her master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Todd Wilson. “The Music of Pentecost” is the theme of this year’s festival. Organists and choir directors from participating churches will direct or play for the 80-plus voice adult choir, children’s choir, handbell choir, and brass ensemble. Singers are invited to join the chorus at the only rehearsal on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided. The church is located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood. Special needs baseball instruction offered The Upper Saddle River Baseball Association and USR Recreation Commission will sponsor a structured, small group baseball clinic for special needs children in kindergarten through grade six. The clinic is free of charge and Upper Saddle River residency is not required. During the program, attendees will warm up, run drills, and play a brief game. The clinic will include breaks and other accommodations. Each participant must have a parent shadow for all clinics. All players will receive a T-shirt. The program is free. Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team plays benefit games The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will make its first appearance in New Jersey on Saturday, June 8 at Yogi Berra Stadium located at Montclair State University in Upper Montclair. The W.W.A.S.T. will play a celebrity doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. when they meet the Comedy Central team on the field. The second game will be played against CBS Sports. Members of the W.W.A.S.T. are veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs while serving our country. Their motto is “Life Without a Limb is Limitless” and their mission is to raise awareness of the sacrifices and resilience of our military. Auxiliary announces ‘A Tour of Kitchens’ The Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its 16th Biennial Kitchen Tour on Wednesday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s tour will feature nine beautiful kitchens located in Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff. Created by award-winning designers, the kitchens range from traditional to ultra-modern. The kitchens will include lovely table settings and floral designs. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular outdoor living space and complimentary refreshments. Fashions and accessories from Kurth Gift Shop will be available at a fabulous home in Ridgewood. Proceeds from this event will benefit the auxiliary’s $1.5 million pledge for the expansion of the Breast Surgery Program at the Luckow Pavilion and Valley Home Care’s Butterflies Program, which provides in-home palliative and hospice care for the youngest and most seriously ill children in our community. Judy Abma and Jean Hildebrandt display an exquisite circa 1860 quilt that was recently donated to the Wyckoff Historical Society. The quilt was made by sisters Eliza Maria Zabriskie Banta, Rachel Ann Zabriskie Voorhis, and Margaret Jane Zabriskie. (Margaret later married Martin Hogencamp, who fought in the Civil War.) YWCA hosts 5K Run & Family Walk benefit On Sunday, May 19, runners and casual walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the YWCA Bergen County’s third 5K Run and Family Walk. Proceeds from this fundraising event will help fund scholarships for the YWCA’s child care programs and summer camps and its healingSPACE Sexual Violence Resource Center, Bergen County’s only provider of a 24/7 hotline for victims of sexual violence. The event will be held rain or shine at Darlington County Park, located at 600 Darlington Avenue in Mahwah. Participants will traverse a challenging USA Track & Field-certified 5K course at the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains. Race day activities begin with registration at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K start at 9:30 a.m. and the Family Walk at 10 a.m. The day’s highlights will include an outdoor family fun area with bounce houses, face painting, music, food and beverages, and the YWCA’s first Duck Derby. Visitors can also tour Camp Ma-Kee-Ya, a YWCA summer camp located on the shores of Darlington’s Upper Lake. Pre-registration for the 5K is $25 per person, which includes the race entrance fee, an official event T-shirt, and access to the family fun/food and beverage area.
