Matthew Landon Martone, a junior at Ramapo High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 89 of Wyckoff, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout. His ceremony was held at the Wyckoff Library on Sunday, April 14. The new Eagle Scout is the son of Ken and Lisa Martone of Wyckoff. He is the 103rd Boy Scout to achieve this rank in Troop 89, which has served Wyckoff continuously since 1926. Martone joined Boy Scouts as a Tiger in Wyckoff Pack 110 in 2001. He progressed through the ranks of Wolf, Bear, and Webelo, earning the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest honor. He joined Troop 89 in March of 2007 and became Scout in April of 2007. Working diligently, he earned Second Class in June of 2008, First Class in September of 2008, Star in May of 2009, and Life in September of 2010. He completed his Eagle requirements in September 2012. Martone has held numerous leadership positions within the troop. He has served as scribe, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, instructor, assistant senior patrol leader, and senior patrol leader. He is currently serving as junior assistant Scoutmaster. the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society. Martone attended No-Be-Bo-Sco for five years (20072011) where, in addition to receiving many merit badges, he earned the Mile Swim award and the OCSOBEBON award for completing a weeklong series of tasks and challenges. He went to High Adventure Camp at Floodwood Mountain in July 2011 as a trek leader and sailed at the High Adventure Seabase Camp in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas as crew leader on a weeklong sailing adventure. This summer, Martone plans to attend the pinnacle of Scouting’s High Adventure Camps, Philmont Ranch, New Mexico. He was elected crew leader for a group of Scouts on this 80-mile trek. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest award in Boy Scouting. Requirements include earning a minimum of 21 merit badges, including 12 required badges in areas such as camping, first aid, and citizenship, several of which take months to complete. While holding the rank of Life Scout, the Scout must be active in his troop and hold a leadership position, and serve continuously and in good standing, for a period of (continued on page 21)

Scott Pruiskma of Interlocking Arms will offer an organizational instruction lecture and interfaith preparedness workshop for the assembled clergy of Wyckoff and Hawthorne on May 30. The program will be held at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 467 Grandview Avenue in Wyckoff from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Pruiksma, who is a councilman in Midland Park, said the lecture will help prepare clergy members for the roles they so often assume during emergencies such as Hurricane Sandy or other major disruptions of daily life. “When something occurs, the faith-based groups always

step up to the plate, but they’re not always organized,” Pruiksma said. The lecture on May 30 is limited to the clergy from Wyckoff and Hawthorne, but observers from Bergen Community College and the New Jersey Governor’s Office are expected to see if the techniques are applicable to larger groups.
