The awards were presented to the township, Three Chicas Mexican Restaurant, Green Lion Digital, and Chocolates, Etc. at the last Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce meeting. Almost 50 members of the Wyckoff Chamber attended the meeting, which took place at Red Mango in Boulder Run. “Wyckoff has a strong commitment to sustainability and the environment,” Wyckoff Township Administrator Robert Shannon noted. He added that Wyckoff is one of only two or three municipalities in the state to have a Green Business program. The program is jointly sponsored by the Wyckoff Environmental Commission and the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce. Chairperson Harriet Shugarman of the Environmental Commission and Chamber of Commerce Vice President Nancy Schuring were on hand to present the awards. Mayor Rudy Boonstra and former Township Committeeman Thomas Madigan were also present. To qualify for an award, a merchant or professional has to comply with at least 15 different items from four of six criteria: recycle and pre-cycle, energy/environmen- New fire pumper (continued from page 3) pumper to the firehouse inventory. “My inclination is to leave it up to the department,” said Mayor Boonstra -- also a long-time volunteer firefighter. “Five-eighty-nine is dirty. It’s not a clean deal,” Christie said, meaning that the price might not stay firm. “We’ve got to get this in line by May 31 or we’ll be facing $18,000 more. Time is of the essence.” Rooney then suggested $625,000 as a take-it-or-leave it price to make sure the deal went through without any more added expenses at the last minute. If the township decides to abandon the oldest pumper, several thousand dollars might later be saved by stripping useful hoses and other equipment. The township committee members said they needed three votes to introduce the ordinance, and four votes to bond the money -- with Christie recusing himself because he is an active fire department member. All four of the other township committee members voted to introduce the ordinance. Scanlan also suggested, to apparent informal consensus, that the autonomous Wyckoff Public Library should be encouraged to purchase and install a generator in case of general electrical failure, so residents without power could stay warm, operate their laptops, and charge their cell phones. “I do think it would be good for the library,” Scanlan said of the generator. “The name of the game is to get people to go to the library, and what better way could there be to get people to go to the library?” Boonstra said the concept would be discussed further in the near future.
