The program will be held in the council chambers at Franklin Lakes Borough Hall, 480 DeKorte Drive. Bivona and Knubel will answer questions from the public. Topics that may be discussed include the fire department, the 2013 municipal budget (which is scheduled for public hearing on April 2), special needs and affordable housing, and other issues of concern. Republican Club to meet Franklin Lakes Republican Club will meet Monday, April 1 at 7:45 p.m. in the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps Building on Bender Court. The club will discuss local campaign issues and the future directions for Republican initiatives. Meetings are open to the club, prospective members, and registered Republicans. Light refreshments will be served. The club is a non-profit organization established to represent the Republican Party in Franklin Lakes. The group is devoted to the cause of community improvement and good government through the medium of an organized Republican Party and the support of candidates for public office who will best represent the interests of the residents and taxpayers of Franklin Lakes. Paterson presents college essay tips Former teacher and school counselor Lisa Paterson will present a seminar on college application essay writing on Wednesday, April 3. This one-hour program will be held at the Franklin Lakes Public Library at 7:30 p.m. Paterson will discuss what admission officers look for, how to fine-tune thoughts and communicate talent, and ways to polish writing skills. Paterson earned her M.Ed. and M.A. from Teachers College at Columbia University. She is the founder of “Write-This-Way” studio in Ridgewood. This program is open to residents of all communities. Trustees hold special meeting The Franklin Lakes Library Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. The meeting will be held at the library located at 470 DeKorte Drive, and the topic of discussion will be membership in the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. Horizon Complex sponsors casino trip The Horizons Adult Complex will host a bus trip to the Sands Casino in Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 25. Board sets budget hearing The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will meet on Wednesday, March 27 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Franklin Avenue Middle School at 755 Franklin Avenue. The agenda will include the public budget hearing. Library sets programs for children The Franklin Lakes Public Library will host a variety of programs for children. Registration is required and may be completed by calling the library at (201) 891-2224, or in person at 470 DeKorte Drive during regular library hours. Children in kindergarten through second grade are invited to spring into crafting on Tuesday, April 16 with the Playful Pinwheels program. Children will enjoy seasonal stories, a snack, and create a one-of-a-kind pinwheel craft. The program will begin at 4 p.m. Sing Along with Teri Merliss will be presented at 11 a.m. on April 19 and May 3, 10, and 24. This four-week program for children includes imaginative stories and original songs. Participation is interactive. The program is suitable for children three years and older. This event is a Family Special and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. On April 3, Snakes-N-Scales will present “Radical Reptiles.” Children in kindergarten and up are invited to meet some remarkable reptiles, including an American alligator, a six-foot water lizard, and a Burmese python. The program will include information about life in the wild, habits and habitats, and the relationships these creatures have with humans. Tickets are required for entry and must be picked up prior to the program. Learn about ‘Positive Health’ On Monday, April 8, Joseph Kasper, MD will present “Positive Health” to the Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps Building on Bender Court. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Kasper is a board certified internist. He has been in practice for 19 years, is a member of the Saddle River Medical Group, and is affiliated with The Valley Hospital. Dr. Kasper received his medical training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is a Healthgrades recognized doctor. Pete’s Corner (continued from page 9) Kiki, was in foreclosure, and the current owner had the right of first refusal. Kakouriotis died in 2008 the day after he sold the luncheonette. Kakouriotis had owned the business since 1980. Prior to that, it had been Frank’s Sweet Shoppe for decades. Dunne said that people still called and asked for that business. A gas leak that developed just after the closing led to a visit from the fire department. This incident led some members of the community to believe Pete’s was only closed for repairs.
