Operation Take-Back announced Operation Take-Back will be held at Wyckoff Town Hall on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the community are invited to bring their unwanted pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs to this event for safe disposal. More than 500 pounds of unused or expired prescription
drugs or over-the-counter remedies, some of them dangerous in the wrong hands, have been collected in past Operation Take-Back drives. These events are conducted by the Wyckoff Police Department in concert with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. The DEA incinerates the drugs collected by local police departments along with the containers, protecting the identity of the original owner. Wyckoff police officers urge residents to not leave medications, whether pills or liquids, in bathroom medicine cabinets where they are accessible to anyone who may visit. There is a growing trend of intentional abuse of prescription drugs, in addition to alcohol, among teenagers. Library celebrates the radio During the month of March, the Wyckoff Public Library is sponsoring free programs dedicated to telling the story of the radio. Reservations are required. “The Radio Broadcast That Terrorized America,” a talk by Rich Phoenix of the New Jersey Radio Museum, will be
presented at 7 p.m. on March 27. It was the night before Halloween, 1938, and 23-year-old Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre wanted to give its audience a little seasonal thrill with a radio play of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds.” Unfortunately, thousands of panic-stricken Americans missed the disclaimer before the broadcast and mistook its news-broadcast style as actual coverage of a Martian invasion of Earth in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. Phoenix, president of the New Jersey Radio Museum, will intersperse audio clips from the broadcast with his discussion of that strange evening and its consequences for Welles and the medium. For reservations for these programs, call (201) 891-4866, extension 2. Parade participants sought The Township of Wyckoff is seeking participants to march in Wyckoff’s Memorial Day Parade. The parade is scheduled for Monday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. An invitation is extended to the men and women who have served our country and to the local schools, churches, Scouts, and organizations. A special invitation is extended to all Gold Star Mothers who would like to attend the Veterans Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Participants will assemble behind Cornerstone Church at 495 Wyckoff Avenue. The parade will leave the church parking lot and turn left onto Wyckoff Avenue, continue Wyckoff Avenue, and turn right on Main Street, right onto Franklin Avenue, and conclude behind town hall at the ambulance corps building. Prospective participants are invited to contact the municipal clerk at clerkassist@wyckoff-nj.com or (201) 891-7000, extension 100.
Musicians
(continued from page 12) The bottom decal is the Celtic knot. She explained that there are several types of Celtic knots representing a variety of things, including the Trinity, eternal love, life, death, and eternity. The one common thing about the symbol is that there is no beginning and no end to the design. The other decals are a serpent, representing good luck and prosperity; a turtle, representing longevity; and a soaring bird, representing the messenger of creativity and prophecy, which are inspirational to artists and musicians. Nussear, a resident of Ridgewood who has been playing the flute since high school, said flutes are also important in Irish history. “This is a modern-day flute, but in Ireland they often use what are called tin whistles or fifes,” she said. Rev. Blaske also entertained the residents with a quiz about Saint Patrick.
