The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center is located on 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park and is open to all Bergen County area senior citizens who are at least 60 years of age. A wide variety of activities, services, and a hot lunch program are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is owned and operated under the auspices of Bergen County. Trustees approve school budget (continued from page 6) The tax rate established by the regional high school budget and resulting tax levy is one of several tax rates that contribute to the total tax rates for the three towns in the regional district. The tax rates for the regional and local school districts are combined with the municipal tax rate, the Bergen County tax rate, the Bergen County Open Space tax rate, the library tax rate, and any applicable municipal open space tax rate, to form the total tax rate, which is often rounded up by the county before it is set as the municipality’s official tax rate. In order to determine a property owner’s total property tax obligation, one must multiply the total tax rate by the assessed value of a property in hundreds of dollars. The regional high school district will hold a public hearing on this budget, but will not conduct a public vote on the budget this year because a public vote is not required under the provisions of a new state law that became effective in 2012. Under that law, the school district moved its school board election to November and, according to the provisions of the state law, a school district that agrees to move its school board election to November for at least four years is not required to have a public vote on its budget if that district keeps its tax levy increase at or below the state mandated cap, which is currently two percent.
