Regional board seeks interim superintendent
by Frank J. McMahon
The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School Board of Education has decided to seek an interim superintendent to temporarily replace Superintendent Lauren Schoen, whose recent resignation from the district will take effect May 15. In a posted notice for the position, Frank Ceurvels, the school district’s business administrator and school board secretary, stated that the district is “seeking a highly qualified visionary to lead one of the top-rated school districts in northern New Jersey.”
Ceurvels explained that the interim superintendent will manage the two high schools in the district, which serve three towns with over 2,000 students. “The Ramapo Indian Hills District has been recognized as one of the best districts in the State of New Jersey,” Ceurvels stated. “The ideal candidate must be capable of continuing the board’s commitment to providing a positive experience for all students.” The qualifications for the position were listed as including a New Jersey Administrator Certification. In addition, a candidate must be experienced in all aspects of district leadership. The notice
also indicates that previous experience as a superintendent in a high school district would be preferred. The notice indicated that the position will be available in May and letters of interest were to be submitted to Ceurvels by March 7. Schoen resigned her position in the regional high school district in order to accept the position of superintendent of schools in the Mahwah Township School District. She had been the regional school district’s superintendent for the past four years, having been hired in 2009 to replace Paul Saxton, who retired in 2008 after serving 11 years as the district’s superintendent. Between Saxton’s retirement and Schoen’s hiring, and until July 20, 2009 -- when Schoen officially joined the dis-
trict, the duties of the superintendent were handled by August C. DePreker, the former superintendent of the Midland Park school district. DePreker was appointed to serve the regional school district in November 2008. After appointing an interim superintendent who can serve in that capacity for a maximum of two years, the school board must then begin the task of finding a permanent replacement for Schoen at the new salary cap limit for superintendents in districts of this size. Based on the current 2,304 student enrollment, the maximum base salary a new superintendent would be able to receive would be $155,000 plus an additional stipend of $2,500. However, the new superintendent might also be eligible for a 15 percent merit bonus if certain goals are met.
