G The Math Place+ challenges students he Math Place+ is a learning center for students in grades 2-12. Kevin and Barbara Cheslack-Postava operate the center full time. Area residents since 1976, their six children attended local schools. In 2008, Kevin and Barbara opened their learning center to offer others what they had given their own kids: a challenging supplement to school math programs and an alternative to the tutoring culture pervasive in this area. “We help kids with school subjects, offer homework help, and preparation for tests – as do others -- but we go further,” Kevin and Barbara explain. “We want each student to become an independent learner and doer -- curious and informed enough to ask difficult questions and willing to seek answers by attacking hard problems. We encourage them to ask ‘Why?’ or ‘Why not?’ rather than ‘How do I do it?’ or ‘Will that be on the test?’ We coach students to be curious, capable, and confident when challenged so they can be in charge of their futures in all things mathematical. Kids respect and enjoy these high expectations.” Area schools work best for students who need substantial help or those who excel. Real Math, Serious Fun Barbara and Kevin say they have seen what they consider a disturbing tendency to place students in a low expectation course sequence as early as sixth grade. Some schools seem to discourage “average” students from challenging courses, and offer “math-lite” that allows good grades, but little serious preparation for future academic and real world challenges. “We are the supplement for kids who don’t want mediocrity,” they assert. “We welcome anyone to visit, see what we do and discuss how kids can be led to do ‘real math’ and have serious fun.” The Math Place+ is located at 36 Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick. Call (201) 444-0063 for details. This learning center is easily accessible from Allendale, HoHo-Kus, Midland Park, Paramus, Ramsey, Ridgewood, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, and Wyckoff.
