Library celebrates the radio During the month of March, the Wyckoff Public Library is sponsoring free programs dedicated to telling the story of the radio. Reservations are required. The centerpiece of the programming will be the East Lynne Theater Company’s stylish and nostalgic radio play of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Norwood Builder” on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. This event is one of more than 100 performances and workshops at venues all around the state this month as part of The New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Stages Festival. This program was developed to encourage New Jersey residents to attend local professional theater by making the experience affordable, accessible, and enjoyable. Since its inception in 1998, The Stages Festival has served more than 80,000 people. For the full 2013 schedule, visit www.stagesfestival.org. On Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m., the library will feature the R-rated 2010 film, “The King’s Speech,” starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. This Oscar-winning biopic of Britain’s King George VI tells the story of the unorthodox speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch conquer his disability to lift the nation with his radio broadcasts during World War II. “The Radio Broadcast That Terrorized America,” a talk by Rich Phoenix of the New Jersey Radio Museum, will be presented at 7 p.m. on March 27. It was the night before Halloween, 1938, and 23-year-old Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre wanted to give its audience a little seasonal thrill with a radio play of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds.” Unfortunately, thousands of panic-stricken Americans missed the disclaimer before the broadcast and mistook its news-broadcast style as actual coverage of a Martian invasion of Earth in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. Phoenix, president of the New Jersey Radio Museum, will intersperse audio clips from the broadcast with his discussion of that strange evening and its consequences for Welles and the medium. For reservations for these programs, call (201) 891-4866, extension 2.
