After graduating from Mahwah High School, O’Connell divided his college education between Emporia State University in Kansas and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. While his college focus was on aviation technology, his true love was always the outdoors and gardening. That love was instilled in him by his father and grandfather as they worked side-by-side in the garden when O’Connell was a child. After a 15-year career as grounds manager at Heartspring School for Handicapped Children in Kansas, O’Connell returned to New Jersey to be closer to family. On a personal note, he enjoys music, crossword puzzles, and bird watching.
