Cacciatore has 18 years of service and is currently the senior patrol officer on one of the patrol squads. He has been active as a child car seat installation technician since 2001 and he acts as the department’s enforcement officer for violations of the borough’s alarm system ordinance. Cacciatore was certified as a field training officer for the department in 2001 and he currently acts as the supervisory officer for the department’s field training program. He is also the recipient of a number of commendations during his career. Lyon has 16 years of service and was appointed as the traffic bureau officer in 2009. He has been active as a departmental firearms instructor since 2005 and he has been certified as one of the department’s drug recognition experts since 2005. He has represented the police department as a member of Bergen County’s Rapid Deployment Force since 2008, and he has received of a number of commendations during his career. Economou, 24, is a resident of Ringwood. He has been employed as a police dispatcher for the borough for oneand-a-half years. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Council adopted an ordinance last week that increases the number of police sergeants permitted on the borough’s police force from four to six. The council then promoted four police officers to that rank. Two of the new sergeants will replace Sgt. James Schnaidt, who recently retired from the department, and William Cook, who will be retiring in September. The other two will fill the expanded two positions. The council also approved the appointments of two new police officers and a new police dispatcher. Mayor Frank Bivona welcomed a capacity crowd of family members and friends of the newly appointed sergeants and police officers at a public meeting of the governing body and he congratulated them all as he administered the oath of office to each of them. Police Chief Joseph Seltenrich had high praise for all the police officers being promoted, saying, “All of them are forward-thinking individuals who are committed to the service of the community of Franklin Lakes and will continue to move the department in a positive direction.” Referring to the two new officers being hired, Seltenrich said, “These two gentlemen survived from an applicant pool originally consisting of over 400 resumes that I received. What I had told them, after they were notified of their selection, is that the Franklin Lakes Police Department always looks to hire individuals who will make us better, and I believe these two new officers fall into that category.” The new police sergeants are Detective Anthony Pacelli, Detective Jeffrey Jost, Officer Andrew Cacciatore, and Officer Robert Lyon, whose appointment will be effective on Sept. 1. The new police officers appointed to the department are James Economou and Dennis Hill. The new dispatcher is Michael Pellegrino. Pacelli has 29 years of service as a police officer for the borough and was appointed to the detective bureau in 2006. He currently is responsible for the day-to-day operational assignments within the detective bureau and acts as the department’s counter-terrorism liaison officer, interacting with county and state agencies. He is one of the police department’s internal affairs investigative officers, and he is the recipient of a number of commendations during his career. Jost has 23 years of service as a borough police officer and was appointed to the detective bureau in 2007. He was also assigned as the police department’s juvenile officer in 2007 and he is the department’s local schools liaison. Jost also acts as the supervisory cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor for the department. Economou will be attending the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in July in order to receive his police officer basic training certification. Hill, 26, is a resident of Newfoundland, New Jersey. He is a graduate of Rutgers University, where he received a degree in criminal justice. He is currently attending the Passaic County Police Academy’s basic training class for police officers and is due to receive his certification in July. Hill also comes from a law enforcement family as his father was a detective with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and his brother is a Mahwah police officer. Pellegrino, 22, is a Ringwood resident. He received a criminal justice degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. James Ryan (continued from page 10) of Higher Education for Virginia. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Auckland, Harvard, and Yale law schools. He is a member of the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission. Commenting on his new responsibilities at Harvard, Ryan said he is honored and excited by the opportunity, and is eager to build on the successes of his predecessor, Kathy McCartney.
