Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • June 26, 2013 James E. Ryan, formerly of Midland Park, has been named dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is due to begin his new responsibilities on Sept. 1. After graduating from Midland Park High School, Ryan earned an A.B. (summa cum laude) from Yale University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. When he completed law school, he clerked for J. Clifford Wallace and William H. Rehnquist. Ryan is considered one of the country’s leading scholars of education law and policy. He is currently the William L. Matheson & Robert Ryan to lead Harvard Graduate School of Education M. Morgenthau Distinguished Professor of Law and the F. Palmer Weber Research Professor of Civil Liberties and Human Rights Director at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he previously served school as academic associate dean. Ryan joined the UVA faculty in 1998 after completing a two-year public interest fellowship in Newark, New Jersey. He teaches law and education, constitutional law, land use law, and local government law. He writes about law and educational opportunity, and has authored or co-authored articles on constitutional law and theory. He is the co-author of “Educational Policy and the Law” and the author of “Five Miles Away, A World Apart,” which was published in 2010 by Oxford University Press. In 2009, he helped found -- and now directs -- the law school’s Program in Law and Public Service. He has received multiple awards, including the All-University Teaching Award from the University of Virginia and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council (continued on page 16) At right: James E.
