Wyckoff
Wyckoff’s 31st Annual Fishing Derby drew approximately 100 children to Zabriskie Pond Park. The event was sponsored by the Wyckoff Township Committee and the Wyckoff Environmental Commission. Musky Trout Hatchery stocked the pond for this catch/release event. Event volunteers included WEC members Peter Wiederhold, Chris DePhillips, and Cathy Runge; Wyckoff’s liaison to the WEC Frances Piskadlo; Township Administrator Robert J. Shannon Jr.; Township Committeemen Doug Christie, Kevin Rooney, and Brian Scanlan; and Green Team members John Adams, Julio Diaz, J.R. Frank, Christine Key, Janice Reynen, Andy Reynen, Kathy Rutler, and Olivia Rutler. Volunteers helped register participants and measure the fish. Wiederhold thanked all the participants, the volunteers, and the Wyckoff Township Committee members for their continued support. Ramsey Outdoor Store donated bait and The North Haledon General Store helped supply the prizes

for the winners in each age category. Wiederhold announced the children who caught the largest fish in their respective categories. Winners received either a rod and reel set for first and second prize or a tackle box for third prize. Many of the families continued to fish after the derby concluded. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping water clean. Non-point source pollution (“people pollution”) results from everyday activities such as fertilizing lawns and gardens, walking pets, and littering. With each rainfall, pollutants generated by these activities are
washed from the streets and yards into the storm water drains that flow into waterways including brooks, rivers, ponds, and the ocean. This event is also part of the Township’s comprehensive recycling effort which also includes weekly curbside collection of single stream recycling and the Nifty Fifty Recycling Program – to improve the municipality’s recycling rate to 50 percent. Nifty Fifty is another step the Wyckoff Township Committee is taking to reduce the amount of household solid waste that must be transported to landfills.
