McMahon The Franklin Lakes K-8 School District is searching for administrators to fill the positions of Woodside Avenue School principal and the district’s director of curriculum and instruction. In recent letters to the school community, Superintendent Frank Romano advised that he had opened round three of the principal search for Woodside Avenue School and has advertised for a new director of curriculum and instruction in the Star-Ledger and on various online job search resources. The ad for a school principal states that the district is seeking “a dynamic, collaborative professional” to lead the Woodside Avenue Elementary School, which is a wellestablished, community-based organization that values an effective balance between strong academics and social and emotional learning in a progressive yet nurturing environment. “The ideal principal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, deep understandings of both primary and upper elementary education, and empathy for the diverse needs of all children.” Romano said he is looking to identify a permanent school principal by the end of June with the hope of having that person begin on or around July 31, when interim principal Helen Attenello will begin her retirement. “I have re-engaged the folks who participated in the initial searches,” Romano advised, “asking them to play the same roles in round three, since they are so close to the work and so deserving of the opportunity to play their parts in finding the right person for the job.” The screening team members will help identify six to eight candidates among all those who apply for the position. The representative committee of 10 planned to reconvene for an entire day on June 4 to interview the top candidates while considering past finalists. The representative board committee of four will then provide feedback on the finalists. “At the close of this third round, I will consider the criteria that we identified at the school and principal profile forums, the conversations and ratings from the administrative screenings, and the feedback and rankings from the representative committee of 10 and board committee of four with the hope of making a single recommendation to the full board of education by mid June,” Romano advised. While this search continues, Romano said he will also explore the backup plan of having an interim principal at the school so that the district will have the opportunity to find the right long-term fit. In his advertisement for the director of curriculum and instruction, Romano indicates that he is looking for “a (continued on page 31)
