Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • January 30, 2013 Wyckoff Wanderings WEA Scholarships available The Wyckoff Education Association is hosting its third annual scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. Through generous donations from WEA members, a fund has been established to provide two scholarships of $1,500 each. One scholarship will be awarded to a student who currently resides in Wyckoff and has attended the township’s public schools. The second scholarship will be presented to a senior who is the child of a current WEA member. Eligible applicants must be planning to attend a technical school or institute of higher learning. Finalists will be chosen on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership, and community service. Beginning Feb. 13, applications will be available at any of the district’s public schools and on the WEA website, www.wyckoffwea.org. The full, completed application with all supporting documentation must be received at Eisenhower School, 344 Calvin Court, Wyckoff, no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Register for spring sports programs The Wyckoff Recreation Department will hold registration for spring sports programs on Feb. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Eisenhower School cafeteria and on Feb. 13 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please note: There will be no second Saturday registration. The spring schedule includes a co-ed T-ball program for current kindergarteners, a modified T-ball/baseball/ softball program for boys and girls in first grade, baseball for boys in grades two through eight, and softball for girls in grades two through eight. Boys in grades four through eight who are playing recreation baseball will once again be using wood bats this year. The fee for kindergarten and first grade is $55. The fee for grades two through eight is $75. Cash and checks made out to Wyckoff Recreation will be accepted. No credit cards will be accepted. The spring baseball/softball season will begin with practices in late March or early April and games for grades two through eight will begin April 20. The season will end no later than June 8. Kindergarten T-ball will begin April 27. First grade girls will begin their program April 23. First grade boys will meet April 25. Preschool holds registration Registration is under way for Wyckoff Christian Preschool and Kindergarten located at 485 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. The school offers programs for children age 2 1/2 to five, including enrichment for four- and fiveyear-olds, a half-day transitional kindergarten, full day and specialty classes, and before and after care. Visit wwwwyckoffchristianpreschool.org for details. Troop 77 holds Open House Wyckoff Boy Scout Troop 77 invites boys in first and second year Webelos to an Open House. The troop will entertain prospective members on Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 at Bethany Church, 568 Wellington Drive in Wyckoff. The meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m. The cubs and Troop 77 will participate in building a basic first aid kit. Parent representatives from the troop committee will be on hand to answer questions. Troop 77 plans monthly group activities and trips such as camping, hiking, mountain biking at Allaire State Park, a skiing trip at Windham Mountain, and visiting historical sites such as Valley Forge, Ellis Island, and the Intrepid. The Scouts of Troop 77 attend summer camp at Camp Rodney in Maryland. Members have attended Philmont Ranch, Floodwood Reservation, and the Northern New Jersey Leadership Training Conference. Troop 77 has been in existence since 1989 and currently has 24 members. The troop has had over 40 Eagle Scouts. BSA Troop 77’s preeminent community service in the last eight years has been in the retirement of over 3,000 tattered flags at Wyckoff Fire Company 1 on Flag Day. Register for preschool program The Wyckoff School District is accepting applications for the 2013-14 general education preschool program housed at Sicomac School. Three- and four-year-olds who reside in Wyckoff may attend. The integrated preschool program incorporates the education of special education children with general education preschoolers, and follows general education curriculum standards. In order to be eligible, a general education child must be three or four years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013. Students will be screened for admission into the program. Three- and four-year-olds generally attend from 8:40 to 11:30 a.m., and four- and five-year-olds attend from 12:30 to 3:20 p.m. The program is five half-days a week in accordance with the Wyckoff school calendar. Parents will be responsible for transportation. The annual tuition for the program is $3,400. A deposit of $500 is due by June 1, 2013 and the balance may either be paid in full no later than June 1, 2013, or may be paid in two installments of $1,450 plus a $25 processing fee. All students will be registered at the time of entry. Each parent or guardian is required to bring the child’s birth certificate, a copy of the child’s immunization record, and proof of residency. It was an honor and privilege to know him.” Galenkamp opted not to seek election in 2008, saying he wanted to spent more time with his five grandchildren and other relatives. He served as Wyckoff’s mayor in 1974, 1981, 1996, 2002, and 2005, and his two long bouts of service on the township committee were interrupted by a break of some years. He was never defeated in an electoral bid, and he was widely respected for his forthright honesty and good nature and for his hard work on behalf of the community. A member of the Cornerstone Christian Church, formerly the Wyckoff Baptist Church, Galenkamp is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeannine (nee Murray), his daughters Heidi and her husband Stephen Misovic, and Heather and her husband Mark Borst, his grandchildren Emelia, Molly, Erin, Sara, and Nate, and his brothers Kenneth and James. Galenkamp (continued from page 3) Another of Galemkamp’s proud moments came when he was part of the seated Wyckoff Township Committee that authorized a legal appeal against the American Civil Libraries Union after Wyckoff was ordered to remove a Nativity Scene from the front lawn of Wyckoff Town Hall. The courts affirmed that communities have the right to display Nativity Scenes if other religions are also represented. Wyckoff maintained the Nativity Scene, a menorah, and secular yuletide figures on the town hall lawn and have to this day, sparking a revival of Christmas displays all over New Jersey. Galenkamp was one of the strongest backers of Wyckoff’s legal action. Galenkamp managed and owned a family dairy on Sicomac Avenue for many years and later served as an aide to State Senator Henry McNamara. Christopher De Phillips, 2012 mayor of Wyckoff, said Galenkamp had been an inspiration to him.
