Wyckoff
Township eyes generator installation ordinance
by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee has authorized Township Attorney Robert Landel to draft an ordinance that could simplify the process for installing generators at commercial sites while protecting the aesthetics of the township and the right of neighbors to their own peace and quiet. “This is strictly commercial at this point,” said Township Committeeman Kevin Rooney, indicating that the matter of generators for single-family homes is a separate issue. Landel was asked to draft an ordinance that would be consistent with the policy that outdoor generators be screened and not placed in front yards. “I think screening is appropriate,” said Township Committeeman Douglas Christie. The ordinance, once drafted, would be introduced, advertised, and considered for adoption at a public meeting. The issue of generators was triggered by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which left large parts of Wyckoff without electricity for five days or more. Many residents have begun to acquire generators, and the generators are especially important to commercial businesses. The last major power failure, which occurred after the Oct. 29, 2011 snowfall, also had a significant impact on local businesses. Township committee members hope for a generator policy that will facilitate commercial users who want to develop individual power sources without allowing the generators to intrude on the neighboring commercial or residential properties. In other business, the governing body adopted two administrative ordinances at last week’s meeting. The new ordinances clarify the definition of terms by listing those Wyckoff employees who are considered public officials. The list includes the township construction sub-code official, the township engineer, the township zoning official, the planning board secretary, and the board of adjustment
secretary. The committee also approved a resolution to permit an interlocal service agreement with Ridgewood for teleconferencing services, and another resolution that will allow the township to share a sewer cleaning/TV truck with other communities in northwest Bergen County. Interlocal service agreements allow municipalities to save tax dollars by sharing non-emergency equipment with adjoining communities.
