Wyckoff Y hosts program for parents The Wyckoff YMCA will present “How to Survive Your Child’s High School Years,” the second in a series of informative parent programs, on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The program will be held at the Y’s Lake House at 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. Led by Bev MacKay, director of curriculum and articulation in the Ramapo Indian Hills District, and Detective Mark Piercy, chairman of the Oakland Municipal Alliance, this interactive discussion will help parents understand the academic, athletic, and social pressures of high school. MacKay will lead a conversation to help parents through the high school years, discussing the importance of having high hopes for children, but keeping expectations reasonable in today’s highly competitive community. Detective Piercy will discuss his experiences with FLOW area youth and address the current issues of underage drinking and drug abuse among teens. There is no charge for this event. Local authors publish travelogue Nursery school holds Open House Grace Nursery School, located at 555 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff, invites parents of prospective students to visit during the month of January. Throughout the month, the school will hold a daily Open House from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors may tour the school, visit the classrooms, and receive information about the school’s many programs. Registration for the 2013-2014 school year is in progress. Register for preschool program The Wyckoff School District is accepting applications for the 2013-14 general education preschool program housed at Sicomac School. Three- and four-year-olds who reside in Wyckoff may attend. The integrated preschool program incorporates the education of special education children with general education preschoolers, and follows general education curriculum standards. In order to be eligible, a general education child must be three or four years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013. Students will be screened for admission into the program. Threeand four-year-olds generally attend from 8:40 to 11:30 a.m., and four- and five-year-olds attend from 12:30 to 3:20 p.m. The program is five half-days a week in accordance with the Wyckoff school calendar. Parents will be responsible for transportation. The annual tuition for the program is $3,400. A deposit of $500 is due by June 1, 2013 and the balance may either be paid in full no later than June 1, 2013, or may be paid in two installments of $1,450 plus a $25 processing fee. All students will be registered at the time of entry. Each parent or guardian is required to bring the child’s birth certificate, a copy of the child’s immunization record, and proof of residency. Applications may be obtained in the main offices at Coolidge, Lincoln, Sicomac, and Washington schools. An application form is also available at www.wyckoffps.org. Bob Walton of Wyckoff and Sal Santoro of Rockaway (pictured) have published a book about their 38-day crosscountry odyssey in Walton’s 1968 Cadillac. “Route 66: The People, The Places, The Dream,” is the story of their 7,292 mile journey. The book contains entertaining text and over 500 color photos. The material for the book came from their daily journals and the 8,000 photos the men took on their travels. Curbside recycling collection goes weekly Wyckoff’s curbside recycling collection will now be available weekly, rather than every other week. Recyclable collections for Districts 2, 3, 6, and 7 will be available on Mondays. Districts 1, 4, 5, and 8 will have collection service on Tuesdays.
